You know Snoopy a little while back
I had one of those, carpal tunnel operations
And the doctor said "I want you to go home and
SHUT UP (mom) for four months," annnd that's kinda tough
I said "I'll try it," but while I was there
I wrote this song [strums his guitar]
Too many pain pills, too much pot
Tryin to be something that I'm not - Superman! Superman
Tryin to do more than I can, I got a little outta hand
I ain't Superman - know what I'm talkin 'bout?
I blew my throat and I blew my tour
I wound up sipping on soup d'jour - I wasn't Superman
I'm trying to do more than I can, I got a little outta hand
I hear ya! Mickey play with us
Yeah, play that Mickey, go ahead!
Play it Willie! [more harmonica]
Well the doctor said son it's a cryin shame
But you ain't Clark Kent and I ain't Lois Lane
You ain't Superman; you ain't Superman
Tryin to do more than you can, you got a little outta hand
You ain't Superman - whaddya think Snoop?
Well when I die, put it on my stone
God said Snoop you take your bad ass home you wasn't Superman
Ha ha ha, no, I wasn't Superman
I'm trying to do more than I can, I got a little outta hand
I wasn't Superman (I hear ya!)
Tryin to do more than I can, I got a little outta hand
The song (Superman) Ā was featured on his 2011 album Doggumentary, which was not only Snoopās 11th studio album for Priority Records, but came in as number 8 on the U.S billboard chart, selling 50,000 copies in its first week in the U.S. Ā
Instruments used: Ā acoustic guitar, harmonica, Ā vocals provided by Snoop and Willie Nelson.
Superman falls into a kinda smooth folk funky style with Snoop's presence and style of singing. I like the vibe. Ā It also delivers an up tempo solo with the harmonica. The harmonica really supports the acoustic pattern that's not really broken. It also provides a more freestyle based input. Ā Ā Ā
Snoop brings a different, Ā more funky tone to the song. I think that Nelson Ā needed Snoop Dogg's style for this song so he could make it more of an upbeat silly reminiscence tune. Ā Nelson says in the beginning of each chorus ātoo many pain pills too much pot tryna be something that I'm not I ain't Supermanā.Just from that first line, Ā the song makes sure it makes its tone felt. With the repeated chorus, the situations end up getting worse and worse for the artist, Ā starting with snoop blowing a tour and ending with him dying from having a little bit too much fun. Ā Ā
This isnāt the first song merge between these two artists. They have performed two other songs together: Ā My Medication and Ā Roll Me up and Smoke Me When I Die. Ā By the title of both singles, you can tell theyāre songs about smoking pot, which is what both artist are famous for enjoying other than making music. So why is it a big deal that two frequent smokers made a song together about smoking? If you didnāt notice by the tempo and tone of Ā Superman, Willie Nelson is a country folk singer. Ā Snoop Dogg is a Rapper, so the two paths donāt really cross frequently. Ā Ā I think the majority of people don't mind that since Nelly jumped on a country track in 2004 with Tim McGraw, and his song, Over and Over, Ā rose to #3 on the Billboard charts. I think that Superman did a amazing job introducing a rapper into the world of Folk. Superman is a catchy song that Ā should have more attention than it does since it's Snoop Dogg singing folk!
