Seeking to reconcile the West African figurative and pottery traditions with new representations of the future, the Texas Southern University Ceramics program, organized by Mr. Carroll H. Simms, is one of the early schools of Afro-Futurism. Mr. Simms was the first black to graduate from the prestigious Cranbrook Academy of Art, and also received consecutive Fulbright fellowships to study sculpture, and African Art History in London.
