Talking about La Cenerentola reminded me that I have both of these gifs lying around (I didn't make either one, just have them on my phone). Get you a man who can do both.

John Relyea and Crispin Lord in Duke Bluebeard's Castle at ENO
"Allison Cook, cast as Judith, withdrew from the performance late in the day because of illness. With only two hours’ rehearsal, Jennifer Johnston sang, not from the side of the stage, as one might expect, but as a costumed, albeit largely immobile presence within Joe Hill-Gibbins’s production. The role was acted, meanwhile, wonderfully well, by Crispin Lord, one of ENO’s staff directors, handsome yet androgynous in a white singlet and silk skirt, so that Bluebeard’s final partner, in a remarkable twist, effectively becomes his husband rather than his wife."

Just finished watching the Opera di Roma Mefistofele with @skeleton-richard and okay, probably my take on the whole thing is "superb principals, good aesthetic, somewhat lackluster ensemble work/direction, my guy John Relyea deserved a more vital staging in which he doesn't wear a clown suit at any point," but holy fuck did it ever finish strong. Of all the productions I've seen, this one unquestionably had the best Faust death scene. I pretty much lost my shit at "Arrestati, sei bello" onward and now I have a headache. So excellent work there.
(idk what's up with the video we watched though, it omitted the entire garden scene even though the plot makes no sense without it and it was clearly recorded)
As always I love me some John Relyea and have absolutely no complaints about the singing but I am not vibing with the staging here. I absolutely understand why a production mounted in Italy in 2023 would do it this way but. It's so static. I do hope the chorus gets to cut loose by the end of the scene.
(Watching this tonight so we'll see, I guess)
