The monster known as Solomon Grundy began as a wealthy merchant named Cyrus Gold who was murdered some time in the late 1800′s. His corpse was disposed of in Slaughter Swamp on the outskirts of Gotham City. Many years later, the mystical aspects of the swamp acted to reanimate the corpse, regenerating it as a shambling giant composed of marsh and floral matter.  With almost no memory of his former life Gold ended up murdering two escaped criminals who were hiding out in the swamp and stole their clothes. He them stumbled upon a camp of friendly hobos. One of the few things that Gold can recall from his previous life was that he was born on a Monday; and from this one of the hobos recounts the old nursery rhyme of Solomon Grundy. Gold chose this as his new name and went on a violent spree. His actions drew the attention of Green Lantern (Alan Scott). It would prove the first of many encounters between the hero and villain. In that Grundy’s form is composed mostly of a wood-like substance, he proved an especially difficult adversary for the hero to contend with (the original Green Lantern’s power ring was ineffective against wood). Nevertheless, The Lantern and his ally Doiby Dickles were able to use their wits to find ways to defeat Grundy. The villain would go on to battle numerous other heroes and was a member of several villainous gangs, including The Injustice Society and The Legion of Doom. A version of Grundy appeared in the television series Smallville portrayed by actor John DeSantis; another version appeared on the show Arrow portrayed by actor Graham Shiels; and Drew Powell portrayed Grundy on the show Gotham. The villain first appeared in the pages of All American Comics #61 (1944).
