Favourite wild orca population - the West Coast Community! (The population closest to where I live! :D)
‘W01 John Coe’
Members of the West Coast Community are identifiable from other groups of killer whales that can be seen around Scotland by their unusual sloping eye patch and larger size.
The West Coast Community originally contained ten individuals, but now number just eight. Some individuals, have however not been seen in recent years and in all the years people have been following this group we have never seen them with a calf.
John Coe (W01) is the most distinct individual, identifiable by the large notch in his dorsal fin!

The big boy himself, the inspiration for my latest silver pendant, John Coe.
JC is one of the last remaining members of a West Scotland pod of orca, a pod unable to reproduce due to infertility caused by human pollutants.
He is frequently seen with a male companion, Aquarius, and these 2 individuals are the only pod members that have been sighted in recent years.
I was lucky enough to encounter JC off the coast of Mull this summer, something I will always treasure as I never thought I’d see John Coe in his lifetime.

After a couple of fantastically unexpected wildlife encounters this summer, I was super inspired to get back in the studio and create.
This new silver pendant was inspired by a close encounter with John Coe, arguably Scotland’s most famous orca.
You all know who that beautiful fin belongs to! W01 John Coe sighted 09/07/2017 off the Isle of Mull.

W01 John Coe was present as was presumably W08 Aquarius (based on previous sightings and the fact the dorsal wasn’t leaning or flopped like the other remaining male members of the community)
This is the first identified sighting of the community this year.
