Aaron Hotchner and John Blackwolf have such a great dynamic.
They work together as equals, which is something Hotch doesn't often have. He has Gideon as his boss, and the team as his trainees/subordinates. They aren't less talented, but Hotch has more experience, and direct responsibility over them. He doesn't get to be snarky because he has to be responsible, he doesn't learn from them so much as steadies their paths.
But with Blackwolf? Here's a man of a similar age, who has responsibilities of his own, who has a community to protect. And who has a different but equal level of knowledge and capabilities.
From the go, these two antagonise each other, but immediately recognise the other's abilities too. They learn from each other (guns vs knives, tracking and profiling), and banter, and put up a damn good fight together.
It's a side of Hotch we don't get to see much! He's having fun, he doesn't have to worry because Blackwolf can watch his own back, they have no ties to each other besides the ones they choose. I love that they remain friends, however distant, because these two are such a good pair.

Aaron Hotchner and John Blackwolf moments I can’t get out of my head:
John: “(…) There are many paths to the same place. Trust me”
Hotch: “Just so you know, you sound like a fortune cookie”

Hotch after saving John from getting shot by shooting the unsub: “You okay?”
John: “You just had to shoot somebody, didn’t you?”

Hotch: “We took down these four”
Spencer: “Without firing a shot?”
John: “Captain America here shot number five”
Hotch: “You’re welcome”

Hotch: “Number six is cut up pretty bad. I don’t think he’s gonna make it”
John: “At least I didn’t shoot him”

I rewatched 01x16 and can't stop giggling through the whole kids getting killed and manipulated because apparently Hotch getting annoyed is my happy place right now
(alert! baby brother showed up! annoyed Hotch summoned! alert!)
"Is your name Samuel?"
"You? You look like FBI."
"Me personally?"
"21 feet." *rolls his eyes behind the glasses*
"You carry 2 guns."
"Your problem isn't with your prints. It's with your perception."
Moral of the day: Blackwolf breathes a sentence and Hotch's blood pressure goes sky high
nah but anyway, blackwolf is a great character. i think his contradictions work really well. i love during the backhalf of the episode when he kicks off at the two cult leaders, both of them for misinterpreting and abusing apache history/culture.
he is shown to be a lot like hotch. he's a profiler, a teacher, basically the reservation police. but he also has this deepseated anger towards white authority and throughout the episode, just this resignation towards the way they see him and speak to him. he anticipates it and he deals with it. all this to say, i really like him, he had a strong presence, and im sad he never made a reappearance.
