Doit on entrevoir un début de tendance dans le fait que 2 Singer/ Songwriters de renom et de grande qualité décident à l'orée de leur soixante ans d'enregistrer leurs nouveaux albums en direct et couchés directement en stéréo. Comme une volonté de revenir à la façon dont on enregistrait la musique avant l'arrivée des magnétophones multipistes et des technique de re-recording inventées par Les Paul, de prouver que ses chansons n'ont besoin de rien d'autre que du talent de grands musiciens pour être fixées, de se prouver qu'on peut accomplir cette performance. Après @neilfinnofficial et son sublime "Out Of Silence", c'est au tour de @joehenrymusic d'user de cette technique pour son "Thrum", à mon sens son meilleur album depuis le grandiose "Tiny Voices" de 2003. Entouré de son fidèle Wrecking Crew à lui ( Jay Bellerose , Levon Henry, David Piltch, John Smith) et de quelques musiciens additionnels, Joe Henry couvre avec ses 11 chansons tous les grands thèmes spirituels et politiques que lui inspire l'époque, évoquant la poésie Rilke, Whitman et Rimbaud quand il chante ses textes sur sa musique si personnelle, certes un condensé de toute la culture américaine mais qui ne plonge jamais dans l'americana pure. Joe Henry c'est l'Amérique telle qu'on l'a rêve, un type amoureux de cultures, revendiquant son identité américaine et la beauté de ce que ce pays à apporté au monde, le tout offert avec une sincerité non ostentatoire, exactement comme l'humain qu'il est lorsqu'on le rencontre. Et puis, il y a un autre génie sur ce disque! Un type ressemblant à un bel agent 70's du FBI qui trimbale sa science du son sur un sacré nombre de grand disques depuis un moment, de Aimee Mann à Ray LaMontagne, de Beck à Allen Toussaint, de Solomon Burke à @jhallyday ( "L'Attente" c'est lui). Ce type s'appelle @rjfreeland et sa vision du son est unique et rare, participant Joe Henry l'a compris depuis bien longtemps qui a fait de lui son bras armé depuis sur toutes ses splendides productions ( le Lizz Wright magnifique cette année).
