ZINE UPDATE

Finally starting to progress with my zine, and by that I mean I’ve done the introductory page... I’m just absolutely hating everything I make at the moment and am really stuck in a rut, but it’s due THIS WEEK so I’ll have to work past the creative block and suck it up. I’m not really happy with the layout at the moment but I figured if I just get something down i can go back later to fix it up. 

You can see better now how I’m gonna try incorporate my magazine collage / photo collages in with the zine. The talkshow host is made up of photos from unsplash.com (all free to use! no copyright!) and I’ll also include some of my own collage later in the zine.

Watching week 8′s lecture reminded me a lot of this book I used to love when I was little. It’s ‘The Invention of Hugo Cabret’ and I think it’s pretty popular, there was a movie based on it that came out around 10 years ago I think.

I love this book because its half written, half illustrated. You find yourself following the plot through both text and image, which I love. Thinking back this book is probably one of the reasons I fell in love with visual communication, as the story is told more so through the drawings than the text. It’s almost as though the text acts as a crutch for the illustrations, the illustrations are the star of the book.

I think theres a lot of futuristic elements in this book. A huge character in the book is machinery and clockwork, and thats shown in the illustrations a lot. This imagery of fantasy like machinery and clockwork type contraptions remind me heaps of some of the paintings we’ve been shown in our lectures, so I had to get the book back out and flick through it. (An example of this futuristic type style is shown in the third picture attached.) (p.s looking back I didn’t actually chose a great example of the clockwork aesthetic so you’re just going to have to trust me that theres some great examples in this book!!!!! You can kind of see remnants of it the key attached to the persons back.)

ZINE UPDATE

Still struggling a bit with the design aspect of my zine. The only progress I’ve seemed to have made is making the front cover, and I still can’t even decide on that. Here are a couple of options I’ve designed, I’m trying to incorporate the Bauhaus style and still keep a modern approach.

In this weeks tutorial class we were talking about how Andy and Karen want us to take a more abstract approach on the assignment, and I’m worried mine is still too literal, so I’m gonna have to think of how I can include something that isn’t traditional / something more creative in my presentation.

SHAPESHIFTERS ACTIVITY

I decided to do one of the workshop activities today during my image and identity tutorial class. I’ve found that doing a semi-mindless jobs while my teachers are talking in online class helps me to stay sane, it can get a bit tedious if I am just sat at my desk doing nothing.

I couldn’t find any coloured paper so I used pages out of an old scrapbook style notebook, but I think it came out pretty good, i even unintentionally stuck to bauhaus inspired colours.

I tried constructing the alphabet from the triangles and slices, I was more successful with some letters and kinda failed with others. I found it hard to try and stick to the bauhaus inspired style, like for example the letter R and F are too pointed and unreadable in my opinion. I think I, K, O and U resemble the Bauhaus aesthetic because 1) they are readable and 2) they have a good balance of pointed and curved edges.

CLASS LAYOUT ACTIVITY

In this weeks class we were given a pretty basic (yet effective) magazine page and told to redesign the layout to emphasise different elements on the page. We were told to create a layout that emphasised the text (far left), create a layout that emphasised the photo (middle), and create a layout for fun (far right.)
