Joann Garrett - Just A Taste (Chess cat. LPS - 1548 (DJ Copy)) Sometime in the late 80’s I was flipping through a small box of records in Finyl Vinyl. The record had what looked like a stock layout with that steel 3D lettering you have seen a million times before. The background color was so dark green it was difficult to read the type. The record was Jo Ann Garrett, “Can You Deal With That.” I played it through a few times before I noticed it read, “Produced by Andre Williams.” I was hooked. I picked up four or five more before I noticed a copy of her LP on the wall of A1. Even then it was expensive. Over the years I saw a few copies but they were beat up and not worth picking up. Thirty years later I found the copy that belongs with me. Brewerytown Beats posted a pic of it on Instagram and I immediately messaged Max. I love when an artist makes a record as opposed to an album of songs. Sometimes that means the artist gets to do some experimental stuff and it also gives the a chance to fail a little. Not everything on the LP “works,” but that is what makes it so great and interesting. Both Joann Garrett’s and Issac Hayes’ version of “Walk On By,” came out in 1969 and both are trip as fuck… I wonder who did acid first?
