Happy #Juneteenth ππΎππΎππΎ
Jonesboro acts to correct a historic wrong removing White Line St. in favor of Starr Drive. A relict of the βJim Crow South β, White Line was just what it sounds like βWhites Onlyβ, Blacks need not apply or cross this mark of demarcation. White Line was the ultimate in your face redline scar from the past. It is no more. πͺπΎππΎβ€οΈ
WSB Radio:
Itβs always served as a demarcation of neighborhoods and communities whether itβs White or Black,β said Councilman Alfred Dixon, who led the effort to change the name. βJonesboro has its history, but when we had the opportunity to choose unity over divisiveness, we didnβt hesitate.β
According to city leaders including Mayor Donya Sartor, the change was prompted after members of the Starr family, lifelong residents, confirmed the streetβs original name was indeed tied to Jim Crow-era segregation, separating Black and White neighborhoods.
