no pleasee spill your thoughts on lewis skiing because his relationship with class is super interesting to me
okay so i wanna preface this and say that like this is mostly just my experience and projecting but I just think skiing in particular is THE sport for me that really signifies class in Britain (also this is from a British perspective idk how this is seen in other countries)
So in terms of my experience: Growing up I knew no one who went skiing because that was for posh middle class white people- that was the perception because you had to have money to even get to these places in the first place. Schools around me didn't do ski trips etc because lmao who can even afford to send their kids skiing. We used to take the piss out of the IDEA of posh kids skiing. (BUT we all secretly wanted it). So when I went to university (one of the ones which had a lot of white private schooled students) people would always ask me where my family ski vacationed and id be like??? anyways. Skiing holds no value to me as a sport BUT it does hold value to me as a class status symbol as much as I wish it wouldn't. Like i still wish I could ski lmao. Even at uni ski trips were inaccessible to me, and it singled me out in a class division in a way no other sport did.
With Lewis, knowing he didn't come from a background that would have easily allowed skiing holidays/ skiing experiences, and knowing the perception of skiing as a middle/upper class activity and a white vacation activity, I think its interesting that you see Lewis in his early years of fame and gaining wealth doing all of these ski holidays. now i'm not saying that its all to do with class and status and wealth, skiing is apparently fun lmao, BUT i do think it must play a part in his psyche. Like. Ya boy MADE IT. He can do the skiing holidays because he has the money and access that his formula one career has allowed him. Which allows him access into this white upper class space (especially in the early 2010's- I know some of this is more nuanced now). It's almost like a signifier for the way he's shifted class, and I get the impression he wanted to showcase shift too. He's in a white (upper class in terms of money and funding) environment in F1 that he has been and is still in some ways made to feel excluded from by the people in that environment. Skiing is a way of saying- I can do everything you can now because I belong here too. I just think thats interesting. Like my boy could be doing anything yet he's skiing. Yanno?
I'm basically saying a lot to say very little here, but yanno. Just thoughts. Feel free to ignore or disagree.
Just spent the last 10 minutes or so of my life ruminating on Ursulaās line in Poor Unfortunate Souls where it goes āBut on the whole Iāve been a saintā even going so far as to reference āsainthoodā in the song and the gospel tone the song takes for those notes
And the implications that it brings forth. The merpeople are aware of Catholicism.
This world is gonna burn
You know, on some days I just get these urges. Urges to kill and maim and destroy and to burn this country down.
I canāt help it, itās part of my nature. Today is such a day. And I couldnāt do a thing! Do you know how bad that is?! When you want to destroy something or someone, preferably by making a lot of a mess and you just canāt?! Because Sebastian insists that I take it easy and not over exert myself! Ha! As if!
So, now Iām plotting and grumbling at home while that stupid kitty cat (yes, I mean you Sebastian!) is babysitting me. Me! The most dangerous man in London! I donāt need a babysitter Sebastian!
Does anybody else flinch when their name is called or were y'all raised in stable and loving environments
