Dog Days Are Over by Florence and the Machine
“Post chorus” (repetition of pre chorus)
Post chorus (repeated 3 times)
Song Information/Credits:
Written by: Florence Leontine Mary Welch and Isabella Janet Florentina Summers
Performed by: Florence and the Machine
Arrangement Notes: The song starts out with a soft string instrument playing and then after a few lines in the first verse it picks up with a soft tambourine and hand claps. Once into the chorus a drum plays along with the tambourine but isn’t too forceful. After the first chorus, the second verse gets very quiet and the drums get completely eliminated until it picks up again with the second chorus.
Lyrical Notes: Starting off with the first line “Happiness hit her like a train on a track” shows the writer’s depth and description going into this song. Not only does the meaningfulness pull the listener in but also the alliteration in the line “leave all your love and your longing behind” does that as well. The chorus of the song is catchy and upbeat which is what makes the song appealing.
Opinions of the song/message: I think that the song has a very positive message and this is expressed throughout the song and even in the title when in states, “the dog days are over”. The message is that the bad days are in the past and good things are coming your way and I think that the writer puts together an interesting way of expressing that message through these lyrics.
·     Having the drums be slowly added within the first verse
·     Completely cutting off all drums in the beginning of the second verse
·     The energy of the chorus
·     Repeating the title/message of the song at many points within it
·     Opening the song with a meaningful line (establishing message)
