“New client.”
Lorelai Gilmore said, slightly surprised, looking in the direction of the girl who had just entered Luke’s café. It was clear she wasn’t from around there. Not just because they had never seen her before in this place, but also because her presence stood out in a different way. Her clothes were a little more expensive compared to what they were used to seeing, her hands were filled with gold rings, and the heels of her boots made a sound the moment she stepped inside. Rory even noticed she had a couple of strands in her hair that were a different color from her natural shade, which matched the leather jacket she was wearing. It looked a little too big for her, suggesting that it probably wasn’t hers, maybe her boyfriend.
In short, she looked good.
Maybe too good for what they were used to.
“Excuse me…” but her attitude was much friendlier than they expected. “I’m looking for…”
“It can’t be.”
Her sentence was interrupted by another voice, this time a male one, making her forget about the mother and daughter pair and focus on him. She turned her body to face the guy she had been looking for since arriving in this little town twenty minutes ago. The same guy who made her drop the bag hanging from her shoulder, before taking a couple of steps forward and throwing herself into Jess Mariano’s arms.
Neither of them noticed at first, but their actions made the whole place fall into silence. Her daring act of doing something like that, and his, because he ended up returning the embrace without a problem. As if he knew the touch of the girl he pulled against his chest, listening to her laugh with ease.
“What did I miss?”
The Gilmore girls didn’t know how to respond to Luke’s question, simply watching the pair as if they couldn’t believe it. Never, in their whole lives, did they think they’d see Jess Mariano this carefree. Hugging someone he seemed to know really well, smiling as if he truly meant it, and allowing someone to touch him beyond just a shoulder. Or even worse, seeing him gently cupping the girl’s cheeks before kissing her lips as if he didn’t care that they were in the middle of the café.
They would be the talk of Stars Hollow for days.
“What the hell are you doing here?” Jess said when they pulled away, still keeping his forehead against hers. “How? When? Why? What?”
“Wanna finish any of your questions, babe?” she said playfully.
“Yeah, well… you surprise me.”
That was the first time they’d ever seen Jess so… flustered.
“I just thought it was time to visit my boyfriend,” she laughed softly, leaning against his chest. “I missed you so much, and I thought, why not?”

Summary: Jess decided it was a good idea to give you a gift... even if that makes him look like a soft boy infront of you.
Warnings: none. Pure fluff.

Jess knew.
Never in his life had he felt so much for a person to the point where it didn't matter what happened to himself, only to her. Her and her beautiful laugh, which he heard every time he was around. Her and her bright eyes, which lit up the room when she talked about what she liked. Her and her way of treating him, always speaking softly even if she had to tell him the most direct thing in that world. Her and the way she touched him, running her fingertips over the skin of his face, outlining his jawline delicately. Her and the way she wrapped her arms around him, hiding in his chest to make it clear that he was her safe place.
Jess was fucked.
And he knew it.
He knew that he didn’t notice all those things just because. In reality, he knew he noticed all those things because he was madly and utterly in love with her. With the girl who was waiting for him, sitting in one of the swings in the park, enjoying the cool air that blew her hair back and forth. It made him wonder how something as simple as that could stir his insides as much as it was doing at that moment. It also made him think whether he should do what he was about to do or just run away from there and live in a “What if?” world for the rest of his life.
No.
Jess needed to do it because his body couldn't take another day with so many feelings swirling around inside him. Maybe that's why he finally approached where she stood, noticing her glance in his direction the instant she saw him out of the corner of her eye, giving him the brightest smile in the world. “Damn” he thought to himself. He wasn't sure how much confidence he had in himself anymore, but if something as simple as a smile could disarm him like that, then it was clear that he had to do it.
That he should give her that gift he'd been planning for so long.
“Hey Jess” she smiled at him calmly “I was beginning to think you wouldn't come”
It was obvious she meant it as a joke, since it only took him a couple of minutes. But her words made him swallow hard, because he had actually arrived at that park before her. The thing was, that he had hidden like a coward, giving words of encouragement to himself before he could face her and tell her everything he had in mind.
“You know I'd never leave you” Jess maybe was a bit obvious with that “But if you need more proof about that... you should keep this.”
He handed her a copy of her favorite book, which she took with confusion, not understanding exactly what was he doing with it. Because it only took her a second to notice that it was not a copy, a second book of the one she had. Instead, it was her own book, which she had not even realized was missing from her bookshelves.
Her first instinct was to open it, wanting to see why she would find evidence in there. But Jess stood in front of her quickly, putting a hand on the cover to stop her from doing it now.
“Do it later” he said with softness that wasn't like him, perhaps nervousness "When you're at home and it’s only you. And when you finish reading it, then you can tell me what you thought of it“
”You'll make me wait that long?" she said amused, but it was obvious that her curiosity was at its limit. She wanted to know what was in there to keep Jess Mariano so nervous. As if at any moment he would run off to hide in the biggest hole in the ground and never come out.
“It'll be worth it, I promise.”
Or at least he hoped so.
Because he didn't say another word on the subject, almost forcing her to put the book in her bag and continue their outing as planned. Walking through the park, having the same ice cream at the same ice cream shop as always, talking about their latest readings, and of course teasing each other whenever they had the chance. For not being a couple, they both acted as if they were, most of the time without even realizing it.
And that union remained without a title until that very night, when the two parted ways after the date that wasn't a date ended. When she entered her room, sitting on her bed so she could open the book and see what had him so anxious.
She was quickly surprised when she noticed the countless notes in the margins. And she was not only referring to her own, neatly written in light blue pen. He was also talking about the black ink on the sides, which carried Jess's deepest thoughts. Notes, expressions, drawings, and thoughts he never said out loud to anyone but himself.
The intimacy of the gesture made her run her finger over the letters, smiling as she wondered how she had been so lucky to end up that way. Or even better, as she turned the pages and reached the end of the book, coming upon something more than just annotations.
On the last page, just below the final word, was a piece of paper pasted with what appeared to be a piece of washi tape she herself had given him not long before. And in the center, the words she had long wanted to hear, were written in a much more romantic way than she had imagined.
