16 Bollywood Movies Inspired From Real Life Events
Every now and then, Bollywood takes inspiration from real life events. That vendor you chatted with while having chai pakoda, that couple who you saw having coffee together at lunchtime, or even that old lady who you sat with every day in public transport; they all are a source of inspiration for a creative mind.
Let us take a look at some of the movies that were inspired from real life episodes. Hit or not, all these movies deserve to be appreciated for the creative liberty they took, and the efforts they spent in bringing these stories in a humane manner on big screen.
Main Aur Charles, based on life of Charles Shobhraj
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOF9MlEOfuE
This one is the latest one to join the list. Based on the life of notorious serial killer with a swag, Charles Shobhraj, this one has Randeep Hooda in the title role. The movie has been garnering quite some favorable reviews, and creative liberty has been taken to fill the unknown parts of the Charlesâs story.
The Attacks of 26/11, based on âMumbai Attacks of 26/11â
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20v_DINmWXo
Starring Nana Patekar as the JCP (Crime), this movie was a whiff that RGV was finally getting back to his style. Though not very successful or appreciated, it is crude and scary enough in the portrayal of the fateful day.
New York, based on â9/11 Attack on WTCâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTie_xegmS4
A story of how 9/11 changed the lives of 3 New York-based Indians, this movie showed the real pain of innocents too were targeted for the crimes they did not commit, as the aftermath of WTC bombings.
Not a Love Story, based on âNeeraj Grover Murder Caseâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9kNXkFv-UpU
Another one from the house of RGV, this movie is not for the faint hearts. The script takes liberty where the law could not provide for facts, but that is what the disclaimer in the beginning is for.
Talwar, based on âNoida Double Murder Case/Aarushi-Hemraj Murder Caseâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQNMsw8Ljjc
The most recent one, starring the Konkana Sen, Neeraj Kabi, and Irrfan Khan, this one too takes liberty where the law has left gaps. An unsolved case, it will forever haunt the minds of those who followed it.
No One Killed Jessica, based on âJessica Lal Murder Caseâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzGZ9oL9Lv0
Changing statements and a stretched case. This was one sisterâs plight to get justice for her deceased sister. The film beautifully portrays the case, and performances by Rani Mukerjee and Vidya Balan are commendable.
Once Upon A Time in Mumbai, based on lives of âHaji Mastan & Dawood Ibrahimâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1O0JOxxOZ4
Spanning the life of an âethicalâ don of Mumbai, Haji Mastan, and the rise of his protĂŠgĂŠ Dawood, of course, using different names, this one is a must watch. Though the same cannot be said for the sequel.
Special 26, based on â1987 Opera House Heistâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PiyQb28geOg
A bunch of men, impose as CBI officers and conduct income tax raids to loot rich businessmen and jewelers. Though the case remains unsolved to date, this movie sure had a creative take which was loved commercially and critically.
Bombay, based on â1993 Bombay Riotsâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sb3E-OOocfA
An inter-religious love story was woven around the deadliest riots India had witnessed, post partition. Maniratnamâs finesse had a beautiful climax when the elderly of both the religions come forward to acknowledge that violence and killings wonât do any good.
Guru, based on the life of Dhirubhai Ambani
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1eE-lCKcxI
One of the few excellent movies in Abhishek Bachchanâs career, this one is a Maniratnam masterpiece. Bachchan junior was perfect in the title role of Gurubhai, and all the other actors, no matter how small the role might be, left a huge impact.
Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, based on the Life of Milkha Singh
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7AAGed3A74
Though there were many factual loopholes in the movie, and more glamor, if Milkha Singh, the legend himself approves, who are we to comment? We loved the way Farhan Akhtar just nailed the character.
Mary Kom, based on the Life of Mary Kom
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxsKcx1IwI8
Another biopic, though this wasnât as successful as âBhaag Milkha Bhaagâ, PC mesmerized us with her strong skills as a grown actor.
The Dirty Picture, based on the Life of Silk Smitha
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM8m4_DLZtY
The southern siren came to a sad end. Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shahâs power-packed performances will make you watch this multiple times; the story of a bold actress, who died a lonely woman.
Woh Lamhe, allegedly based on Mahesh Bhatt and Parveen Babiâs Relationship
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDYYDeoUzzM
In the words of Mahesh Bhatt, the movie was his tribute to late actress Parveen Babi, with whom he shared a relation. In his words, he tried to save her from the devastation she was moving towards, but couldnât, and that was one guilt he carried throughout his life.
Border, based on â1971 Indo-Pak Warâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUtAfV2_3Kw
This was J.P.Duttaâs masterpiece. From songs to locations, to the brilliant performances by actors, it showcased the pains that soldiers and their families have to undergo, to protect us, and by extension, our country.
L.O.C. Kargil, based on âKargil Warâ
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxHqLIatric
Another war saga by J.P.Dutta, this long movie tanked at the box office, mainly because of the peace talks going on between India and Pakistan. Though not as good as âBorderâ, this still tugged at our hearts, when we came across reel versions of Capt. Vikram Batra (played by Abhishek Bachchan), Capt. Anuj Nayyar (played by Capt. Anuj Nayyar) etc.
So, this was our list of movies based on real life events. Have any others in mind? Do let us know in the comments below.
