To complete a fully immersive environment, the ground will be texturised with plates of ice, with light emerging from in between the cracks. The cracked ice used to show the effects of climate change in Antarctica. Using the ground as a layer of detail rather than a support platform re-enforces O’Hara’s original task of connecting people to the environment, as well as creating the feel of another world “trapped” beneath our feet. Finally, the “movement” of the plates will bring the space to life, and allow the viewer to become disengaged from the regular “static” world and move them into a living, breathing one. Achieving this goal will require solid plates/boards for the viewer to walk on, with each board kept separate enough for the light to come through. First, we will line the floor with a light blue sheet as a canvas for the ice plates. Next, we will form the ice plates from polystyrene; using polystyrene is the safest and easiest for forming shapes of ice plates that the viewer can walk on with ease.To create the light emerging from the cracks, we will line the cracks with LEDChristmas lights. LED lights are much brighter and vibrant, and are easier to control than regular lights.To create a “moving floor”, we will manipulate the LED Christmas lights to brighten in the area where the viewer takes a step. This, combined with projection of running water onto the floor surface itself will create the illusion of water moving underneath the plates. We will also use subtle projection of moving ice textures around the bottom of the walls where the floor and the walls meet, so that it gives the viewer the impression that the floor itself is moving forward.
