With Apple Pie and Cheese || Irene, Jerry & Lawrence
“But I, when I undress me Each night, upon my knees Will ask the Lord to bless me With apple-pie and cheese.”
Eugene Field, ‘Apple-Pie and Cheese’
Waking up early to prepare for lessons on making apple pies right after New Year celebrations didn’t put Irene at her best mood as she bundled up for a winter morning walk towards the edge of the forest. She was excited, of course, especially because it was probably her first time to spend the first day of the year with two good friends, but it would take her a good two hours going about the house like a zombie, having breakfast, doing chores and dressing up, before she could will away her grumpiness from lack of sleep.
Still yawning as she went about town, Irene exchanged greetings with people she passed by until she came to the edge of the forest where there was a dirt road that presumably led to Jerry’s cabin and perhaps Lawrence’s hideout. The woman paused and looked around, making sure she was in the right trail before continuing, her boots sinking deeper in the snow. She belatedly wished she had asked either Jerry or Lawrence to meet her on the trail, but it was too late for that now.
