“ why’d you say it, ”    a question,  though spoken as a statement.   he doesn’t mean to break the silence so suddenly,  to interrupt this small moment of calm  ( a break from the anger and sadness that managed to both divide them as parents and bring home their her kid ),    but his mind stays haunted with ways he is going to lose this.   he doesn’t have the right to be in makayla’s life--   not really.   not unless kim lets him.   it just hadn’t occurred to him how easy that would be,    the switch from ‘our daughter’ to 'my daughter.’
