I feel interminably flat.

It definitely still has the same issue as s3 and s4 trying to manage a core cast that is a little bit too large to care about or follow closely as one should if they keep changing the scene and tone so frequently. But it had attention(?) to detail(?) In this day and age? Shocking, truly. The little cues and foreshadowing were nice, you actually got to enjoy coming up with your own answers, and so did the characters. And it finally found a good throughline to the early seasons. Whoever wrote this, I know for a fact s2 was their favourite. The whole russian subplot did not sit right for me - as I’ve seen other people point out, the previous evil agonists were the us state and their hubris and negligience, why tf was the red scare necessary- and I outright hated the context s4 gave to the evil dude. Idk I liked when the mindflayer etc were construed as evil beyond human comprehension, something without human mind or motivations. It was a metaphore,, I thought,,, evil cause by human actions but evil that is after all no longer human. The human evil was what they did to 11’s mom and how they ‘created’ her and how later Will was treated. Wtf you mean it was a creepy hair colour changing twink from the 50s with a specific vendetta for El? Don’t get me started how all that undermined the entirety of 11’s s1 and s2 backstory. If she got to hang out and train and be bullked by her sinlings, how would she have not known about ms nr 8 who escaped??

Anyway, anyway. I’m sorry El had to play a supporting role in this half of the season, but the spotlight was clearly on international man of mystery: Will. Lil guy so deserved to catch a break. I’ve seen people squee about queer love saving the day, but to me it was more importantly about queer self-love and acceptance. The whole self-actualisation montage being a one to one callback to s2 is just underlining this finding back to form, both for the character of Will who had to carry all of this with him for such a long time, and the show itself. Like I said, I see you writers, I know what you are up to. I know this is ‘final season last hooray gather the cast’ type of behaviour. Can I even call it nostalgia pandering? Has it even been that long since then? Idk. But am I falling for it? 100% and enjoy it too. As for Will’s story, at this point I presonally do not see it necessary for him to ‘get the guy’ in the end, never mind that I don’t particularly see Mike being written as someone who recrocates and think that was also a bit of what Robin saw and prompted her final advice to Will. To me st is not a queer story, but finally a story focused on other things that coincidentally has queer protagonists in it. Will has seen and accepted himself, whether Mike likes him back does not make or break his character arc/ story. (It is very fun to consider it from an angle of Mike having a ‘type’, that being people with telekinetic powers. Like, hey I saw the girl you like do that, look what I can do too lol. I have been in the tjlc trenches don’t get me wrong, I am extremely jaded about reading ‘author’s intent cues’. Girls gays we are hallucinating, but I will partake in the devils weed amd have a good time with yall). I will have to say this was not how I thought his powers would manifest. I for sure thought he would take control of a demigorgon from the inside and hunt down its kin or spark the dilemma of nit being able to hurt them bc it could kill him. Liked being wrong, this is cool too. I especially like the sinister connotations of it. His power is not like El’s. Hers is innate, whereas his is tied to Vecna/down under or whatnot (I saw someone point out the hand positions of them using telekinesis, El with her palm down (upper world) and Will with palm up (lower world) and I love that detail if intentional). I really think or hope this link will lead to complications. His powers could be gone when the worlds get separated/Vecna destroyed. Or we could have a nice corruption arc. Lbr those white eyes and final stare were not hallmarks of a ‘yippie, plot saving magical transformation’. That’s some pent up shit and I am so here to watch it explode. Like, some pipes. In some barracks. Or sth.
