So i just read a sci fi book Proxima and it was very good and i was just like (uh spoilers?) fuckin of course it would be totally in character for Humanity to blow up Earth and the whole inner solar system if not the outer too i think with an unintended radiation and particle blast because they were so fucking stupid half of humans literally fought the other half over bullshit social constructs like pride in their people and progressing the human race when the whole fucking culture had condemned past generations for being arrogant Wasters of resources that were put into grand hasty projects that weren’t useful - when they literally did the same again right then and there for the same stupid fucking reasons. And then killed at least 95% of the human population alive and destroying all conditions for life on Earth when they’d JUST said it was off-limits for war. Holy fucking shit. At least the undeirables they kept shipping off without their consent to the colonies on Per Ardua survived - with no more meddling from the imperial violent UN overlords. The end was very open ended. Alternative universe? It was pretty much absurd. I was surprised by how much i could understand the Latin. Anyway the Alien artefacts mystery never came close to being solved and what I thought was going to be a significant character and reunion between the sentient AI spaceship Angelia and Stef was extremely anti-climactic like what. But anyway it was an amzing book i didnt care that some info dumps were slightly illogically coming from some chars mouths because I was just so Hungry for this world. It was an amazing look into the banality of violence. And I was never frustrated with the story, when they came across the tyrant lording it over one dropship community being a disgusting murderous sexist pig - the protag’s partner just straight up shot him in the eye. Fuckin??? YES??? she was like: i am not going to deal with this putrid swine while trying to survive and bringing up my daughter. Then the communities merged and everything was decided by consensus according to the rules of the community of the Mothers. And literally, in protags and partner's community all the murders happened LITERALLY because of male sexual entitlement. Like damn. Are we ever going to get rid of this human infection?. But the author dealt so extremely well with these things??? He showed the violence and destructiveness of this shit. And also the total dispossession of the poor and criminalised - so matter of factly. The privilege of the rich and powerful - that the suffering of colonists was literally not a blip on the radar. The protag’s eventual partner was Aborigine, and when she was literally kicked off the ride home to become a settler baby machine for her genetic profile, she was like: you have no idea how much I’ve worked to overcome the obstacles to me becoming an astronaut. It was good. Perspective enhancing just generally you know. Sci fi generally always makes me feel grateful for the time and space i live in.
