"Jadia, darling," Alexandra circled her captive, resting her hands on her shoulders and gently but firmly pressing Jadia into a chair. "This is Grey. They're a therapist who works specifically with people who have experienced trauma," Alexandra crouched next to Jadia, tilting her head towards her with a finger.

"You're not settling well," Alexandra said quietly. Jadia refused to meet her eyes. "I think you should talk to Grey. I think they could help you adjust to your new lifestyle. Cope with the loss of your country."

"I don't think so." Jadia said flatly.

"This is a decoy," Jadia said. "The enemy may be in the castle."

Alexandra raised an eyebrow, then gestured to the guards. They backed away from the doors and formed ranks around Alexandra and Jadia.

"Very well," Alexandra said, looking at Jadia. "There are armed assassins in the castle. They will kill us both," Alexandra reminded. "What would you have me do?"

Jadia dropped her gaze, unable to meet the queens eye as she spoke.

"Retreat to your chambers, lay an ambush."

"Please, stop!" Jadia's voice had a ragged, pleading edge to it as she tugged against the ropes that bound her. Tied to the saddle of her captors horse, her feeble tugging did nothing slow the train. She stumbled on behind, barely able to keep her feet under her at this point.

The rider finally turned around, casting her a glance.

"We don't stop until the queen gives the word," they said. "Next camp, a few miles out or so."

"I can't keep up," Jadia said, proving the point as she stumbled.

Jadia stood in the garden, squinting in the bright, burning sun. Alexandra had her dressed appropriately for the day, a sleeveless dress that flowed loosely down to her ankles. Decorative chains that connected Jadias wrists. For show, of course.

Still sweat prickled the princess brow as she stood amidst the crowd of the party, trying to avoid, well, everyone.

Jadia grit her teeth as Alexandria leaned over her, smiling too wide.

"Darling, that's got to hurt." the queen said sweetly.

Jadia dropped her gaze, focusing on not saying anything she'd regret. She held herself up on one shaky arm, her other hand pressing against the wound as tight as she could.

"Please," the word was barely a whisper. "Alexandra, help me."

"Hmm, I'm sorry," Alexandra leaned on her cane as she belt down. "I didn't hear what you said."

Jadia curled her fists into her pillow and sobbed. Alexandra sat on the bed beside her, gently stroking her hair. Comforting. Or trying to. Jadia hated taking comfort from the hands that caused her pain. But what choice did she have?

"Please stop," Jadia begged. Her caretaker didn't spare her a glance. They pressed the cloth to Jadias side, wetted with something that stung like hell, and didn't flinch when Jadia screamed.

"This would be easier if you would allow a sedative," the caretaker wasn't talking to Jadia. Just as well; words were flitting in and out of her brain and she couldn't muster up a coherent response.

"Please," Jadia begged. "I don't even know how long it's been. I'm so hungry."

The queen huffed a small laugh, casting a glance around the windowless room. It would be easy to lose track of time in here. Still, it had only been a day. Alexandra eyed the princess, wondering if she even knew how privileged she'd been. To never be without food. To have servants at her beck and call. Born into the life of royalty. And now reduced to a begging mess after only a day without food.
