As with a lot of key position players drafted over the years, a lot of hope has rested on Post’s shoulders ever since he was drafted in the 2009 draft with Richmond’s second pick. There have even been some comparisons made between Jayden and the great Matthew Richardson but as of yet, Post has not lived up to these expectations.
Last season was an interesting one for Post. After several years being used as in multiple positions on the ground it was thought that the best position for Post may be in the backline at Centre Half Back. At the beginning of the year Jayden struggled to crack a game in the seniors, spending plenty of time with Coburg learning his role. Post managed to break his way into the side for the Round 9 win against Essendon, however he was back playing with Coburg the following week. Late in the season though Post managed to play several games in a row for Richmond and showed some signs of being a genuine option down back.
2012 is a big year for Jayden Post. After years of playing a game every now and then he just has to cement his spot in the senior side. Post has always had talent and a good pair of hands on him; he was a terrific marker at junior level but as of yet we have not really seen this at AFL level. Jayden needs to translate this game to the Richmond backline and become that backman Richmond can rely on to take those intercept marks.
Perhaps the biggest thing that Post needs to add to his game is confidence. Getting games sparingly has no doubt hurt Post in this area so perhaps a solid run of consecutive games may see Jayden take the next step and become a regular member of Richmond’s best 22. Richmond could definitely use his help down back and alongside the likes of Rance, Grimes and Griffths he has the chance to form the young core of the Tiger’s backline for years to come.

2010 was somewhat of a lost year for Jayden. After impressing many with his athleticism and ability to take a mark in his debut year it was thought young Post would take another step up in 2010. Unfortunately though, for whatever reason Jayden was unable to take the big leap forward and instead found himself at Coburg for most of the year, adding only seven games to his senior career tally. When he did appear for Richmond most of Post’s time was divided between playing key forward and back roles.
After another pre-season of development we can only hope that Post takes that leap in 2011 from promising key position player to a regular in the Richmond side. The new substitute position should help his cause as it appears Damien Hardwick has been grooming Post for the 2nd mobile ruck position, a position we saw him play late in the 2010 season. With his good hands and ability to run all day, Jayden reminds some supporters of the much loved Matthew Richardson. If Post turns out even half as good as the great man then the Tigers will have a fantastic player for many years in their side.
