a lot of people like to say carl wasn’t afraid during the lineup and he was so badass but he was a literal kid, ofc he was scared. He had gone through so much to know not to show fear in the scene with negan at the lineup. when they were stopped by the saviors right before they met negan, he looked to his dad, he probably just wanted to at that moment ask his dad to fix everything but he knew that wasn’t possible.
and then this was ricks reaction when he saw carl looking at him

In the episode Clear (3x12) Carl tries to go off on his own to retrieve the last known existing picture of Lori. At this point, he and Rick don’t fully know or trust Michonne yet, but she tags along to keep Carl safe. Carl seems to get annoyed by it multiple times, but she of course doesn’t back off. By the end of the episode, Carl builds a bond with Michonne and tells Rick she’s okay.
He went for a picture of Lori to make sure Judith got to see her mother. He left with a mom to raise her.
