Jazz saxophonist Donny McCaslin joined his father’s band when he was just 12, and he’s been busy making music ever since—going on to attend the famed Berklee College of Music, linking up with other bands and traveling the world. And for 20 years, he’s been leading his own group, integrating “the entire range of sounds that a tenor sax can produce into his repertoire: from mainstream modern to funky fusion to laid-back balmy ballads, all flavored with his own experimental style,” according to AllMusic. Which has allowed McCaslin to collaborate with others—including David Bowie’s final LP and EP—and make his own albums, including 2016’s Beyond Now (stream it here). “Anyone who has followed Donny McCaslin’s career, particularly over the last decade, understands that his quartet’s collaboration with David Bowie on Blackstar was already a perfect fit. This band—comprised of the saxophonist, drummer Mark Guiliana, bassist Tim Lefebvre and keyboardist Jason Lindner—offered recorded evidence of their unique, exploratory yet accessible meld of modern jazz, pop, and electronic music,” offered AllMusic. “Because of their association with Bowie, the quartet’s Beyond Now will get attention from a wider range of music fans than a jazz album normally would. But this record warrants attention on its own merits because it showcases the exciting, genre-blurring sound of a sophisticated band coming into its own.” And with a new long-player, Blow, arriving early next month, Donny McCaslin plays two hometown shows this week, on Thursday and Friday at Rough Trade NYC.

Buddy DeFranco et Tony Scott adaptèrent avec astuce le be-bop à l'instrument un peu fragile. L'Israélienne de New York Anat Cohen, soeur du trompettiste Avishai Cohen, paraît seule en lice pour le jazz d'aujourd'hui. Elue numéro un des clarinettistes par le magazine Down Beat, elle redonne à l'instrument une extraordinaire joie de vivre.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                Ce dixième disque est le plus réussi. La façon dont elle visite le Brésil de ­Milton Nascimento, réinvente celui de Baden Powell, se balade dans le choro populaire plus que dans la samba sophistiquée, son exubérance, son invention mélodique couplée à la mise en place d'un swing fou justifient ce titre, Luminosa, qui qualifie la luminosité d'un objet dans l'obscurité. Ainsi, l'évocation ten­dre de sa mère dans Ima, la douceur, à la clarinette basse, qu'elle donne à la Beatriz d'Edu Lobo et Chico Buarque, alternent avec la danse éperdue de son Happy Song. The self-titled debut from Saha Gnawa pairs Moroccan Gnawa with NYC jazz and groove, channeling North African futurism through cross-cultural improvisation. Refined via late-night sessions at LunÀtico in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, Saha Gnawa explores trance-like states through intuitive interplay, allowing ancestral rhythms and melodies to drift into unknown territories. What emerges is both an authentic performance of centuries-old Gnawa tradition and a bold step into new dimensions of sound, where traditional song forms dissolve into ecstatic dance tracks laced with subtle electronics. Saha Gnawa builds on the legacy of Innov Gnawa, who were nominated for a GRAMMY for Best Electronic Dance Track for their 2017 collaboration with Bonobo, "Bambro Koyo Ganda." The ensemble is co-led by Maâlem Hassan Ben Jaafar, a master musician carrying forward generations of Gnawa tradition as the son of esteemed Maâlem Abdullah Benjaafar of Fes. Trained in his father's officially recognized Gnawa school and by master musicians throughout Morocco, Ben Jaafar earned the title of Maâlem (master) as a teenager, an honor bestowed only by consensus of other masters. He performs on vocals and guembri (a three-stringed bass lute) and has collaborated with artists like Randy Weston. Co-leader Daniel Freedman, a drummer and composer, brings decades of experience collaborating with artists like David Byrne and Angelique Kidjo, as well as deep knowledge of traditions from Africa, the Middle East, and beyond. The ensemble also features Amino Belyamani (Innov Gnawa, Dawn of Midi) and David Lizmi (Innov Gnawa, Bombino) on qraqebs and backing vocals, Jason Lindner (David Bowie, Now vs Now) on keys and synths, and Guilherme Monteiro (Gal Costa, Forro in the Dark) and Gilad Hekselman on guitars.
