Be afraid. Be ever so afraid. The Futurist Komedy Kabaret that looks toward the 21st Century (where stand-up comedy is treated with contempt and audiences are - perhaps mistakenly - given some credit) is back in Edinburgh and, once again, its host is a very angry young man indeed. Hosted by Simon Munnery as The League Against Tedium - whose only enemies are Women and The Sea - the show also features Kevin Eldon (Brass Eye) and Stewart Lee (Fist of Fun). As Stewart explains: "The whole thing started a few years ago. We used to do it every week at The Market Tavern in London between about '93 and '95. The show will kind of like be Jesus preaching with funny parables to illustrate his point of view, I suppose. Simon Munnery is the new Jesus...". Branded "fascistic, rude, aggressive, nasty, contemptuous and a perfect end to the evening" by the Sunday Times, the show also sets out to expand the English language by a factor of ten, and render America a mere irrelevance. All this and alter the entire face of British comedy, in just one show. But surely... British comedy can't be in that bad a state? "We will pin back its eyes with needles and force it to regard its own ugliness. We will slice out its foul, lecherous tongue and replace it with a clapper, as is appropriate. We will cut off its hair. We will alter it. Permanently." Like we said, be afraid...
