for wip wednesday, a wee peek of that shadowgast fake marriage au i talked about on the weekend, tell me what you think
And Essek is without an escape plan.Â
Trapped masterfully in an endgame heâs failed to see occurring in the shadows around him. He let his old arrogance ruin him, he should have seen the knife coming long before he felt it in his back.Â
âA welcome union between our Denâs, long overdue,â The world screeches back into focus as Deirta offers the usual platitudes and Ulric Tasithar nods along, barely containing his smirk, a plan well executed and just a moment away from being finalised. The clock ticks ominously in the back of the room and Essek feels every second like a vice around his chest.Â
So Essek does something heâs rarely done before. He panics.Â
âIâm afraid that wonât be possible,â he says, a touch too loudly. The only visible sign heâs not in full control of himself.Â
His mother sniffâs haughtily, fully aware he has no way out and not in the mood to indulge his silver tongueâs attempt to earn his freedom. Or at least a momentâs reprieve to think. âMy boy you -â
âIâm already married,â Essek states as calmly as he can, trying not to show the cold panic that has settled into every inch of him. His mother blinks at the outburst, momentarily stunned. A good thing, with Deirta on the back foot he could wrangle a way out of this horrible situation. After all, the Umavi of Den Thelyss had been expecting cool, calculated arguments from him.Â
Not this.Â
And in all honesty neither had he.Â
Outwardly he is calm, relaxed in his seat and presenting an aura of control as he lets the statement settle like dust on the furniture. Internally Essek desperately tries to fumble together something to cover for his outlandish declaration.Â
Itâs not unusual to bypass the pomp and circumstance of a public wedding for a quieter affair but he can tell from the faces around the table that they can see it for what it is. A desperate attempt to maintain his freedom.Â
âIt was a lovely ceremony,â Uraya pipes up and Essek exhales slowly to avoid doubling over in gasping relief. He could kiss his dear friend. A witness, a respected one at that, adds more weight to Essekâs words and he looks less like a child clamouring for any exit and more like a man in control of the situation. Â

#true love is i explain the timeloop to you every reset and you believe me without hesitation#<- okay but Essek does time stuff so thereâs no way he Doesnât have like#a time loop password#like something he would only tell to someone if they said they were in a time loop in order to prove it#he believes Caleb right away and tells him#so that the next loop is even smoother#but it wouldnât have mattered because that trust is already there#I was thinking about this so much yesterday @spottedenchants
and ok now iâm imagining caleb in the early loops, shaky and a touch manic, essekâs first death still so fresh in his mind thereâs bile in the back of his throat and the situation still new enough that heâs sure itâll end at any moment and this will be the last loop and essek will be dead, permanently and there he is, for the first time heâs got essek to himself for just a moment and heâs desperate and practically vibrating as he talks too fast, the whole horrible nightmare spilling out of him like a broken damn of words flooding forth, most of which are promises to fix it and heâs going back and around on his own explanations until its a tangled web of barely coherent sentences that essek, who is still startled by calebâs sudden storming of the dungeons, half mad and injured, his gaze torn between the babbling mage before him and the cell door thatâs bowing under the pressure of the guards ramming into it
essek can just about decipher whatâs going on and he takes a breath, pulls together some measure of calm born of years of service in the bright queenâs court, and he gently cups calebâs face and gives him the password he never wrote down and barely thinks of, just a simple secret that is just words at this point because he knows in heart he believes caleb, heâll always believe caleb. he has faith in this man with tears in his eyes and feverish fire behind them that steels essekâs breath with the certainty that he will find a way to save him even if he has to bend the universe to his will to do it and caleb repeats it, repeats it like a prayer even though the words were committed to memory the moment essek spoke them and they just gaze into each otherâs eyes, time pausing for just a moment and there are so many words unspoken, heavy in their throats, so many secrets choking them and it's too early to say them and yet too late as well and then the guards break the door down and caleb shuts his eyes to the blood and hears the last gasp of essek before he wakes to jesterâs scream all over again but this time, this time he breathes because now he has a secret that can ensure essek hears him, now he has something solid to build a foundation on and its loops and loops that end horrifically before caleb realises he never needed the password to begin withÂ
wip wednesday once more, here's another wee peek for the edge of the blade
this snippet might suck a little cause i'm sick so doing a once over of it and touching it up a little i may have missed shit :( feckin hate being sick
âMr Widogast, my thanks for your swift arrival,â The Umavi greets and Essek doesnât dare turn and face the man who now holds his future in his hands, completely unknowingly. Best to maintain an air of indifference to the proceedings than potentially reveal the truth. He doesnât trust his own face right now to keep anything secret and heâs sure the naked fear in his eyes would be easily read by even the least perceptive of the room.
âIt is my honour, what can I do for you this evening?â Caleb responds cordially, the shuffle of clothing catches in Essekâs ear. A bow, perhaps a small one but enough to soothe the Umaviâs ego. A good move.
âIt seems I did not receive an invitation to your wedding to my son, may I ask why?â Deirta questions, her tone flippant as though it hardly matters but the directness of her questioning gives everyone in the room pause.
âWe are not married,â Caleb responds easily and Essek feels something cold and sharp lodge itself under his breast. Of course Caleb would deny it, itâs the truth. He has no reason to lie here, least of all to an Umavi of the dynasty. There is nothing gained for himself or the Mighty Nein by incurring the wrath of one of the major political and religious leaders of Essekâs people.
And despite recent events, their relationship is far from healed. Caleb owes Essek nothing. Itâs Essek who is indebted here and he can not expect Caleb to allow for another unearned favour. Especially one that requires more than the most basic of lies. This is a far more elaborate play, one that will continue for some time. Essek doesnât expect Caleb to sacrifice his time or his reputation on the whim of a desperate man.
He doesnât expect it. But he had hoped.
The quick denial shouldnât hurt. But it does all the same. Because hope, no matter how small, is a dangerous creature that takes up far more room than one can afford to lose.
Essek briefly wonders if theyâll visit him at least. Or if heâll even be allowed visitors.
âAh thank you for clearing that up, you may go -â
Caleb clears his throat sharply, âApologies Umavi but you misunderstand, we are not married yet. It is a handfasting,â he clarifies, bulldozing a path through the social faux paus of interrupting an Umavi and somehow ensuring that itâll be the least of the offences she can take at the same time.
âExcuse me?â Deirta says as cold and as sharp as splintered ice.
âAh, Essek did mention that it was unheard of in the dynasty. A handfasting is a trial marriage of sorts, a year and a day. After which the couple can either choose to marry or walk away without the issue of divorce and such complications,â Caleb lectures gently, as though it's a small matter. A simple cultural misunderstanding that one can merely dismiss.
âI see,â
âWe didnât invite you as a handfasting is generally viewed by the closest family and friends of the couple,â Caleb continues cheerfully. Essek chokes a little on his tea at Calebâs very unsubtle insult towards his mother. He almost turns around just to catch the false innocent smile he knows is there but refrains from basking in the small victory to ensure the battle is not lost.
âSo you and my son are in fact,â Deirta trails off and Caleb approaches, standing sentry behind Essekâs chair.
âJa,â Calebâs hand curls over his shoulder, squeezing it gently. Essek reaches up for it and tries not to cling to him. Calebâs thumb rubs back and forth comfortingly and it draws his motherâs narrowed gaze. Essek scoots a little closer to Caleb, as though he can hide behind Calebâs hand like a childâs game of hide and seek.

(ao3)
They land hard, the breath forced out of them in a pained sudden whoosh. Caleb clutches Essek to his chest, shielding him and pinning the drow to the ground with his weight as he catches his breath.Â
The weak evening sun is almost blinding after the endless night of Rosohna and it takes a moment for him to adjust to the light, however soft it is, after being so used to the darkness. The winter rays and bitter bite of the cold wind are almost heavenly after months of the same terrible day over and over and over.Â
Caleb waits a beat.Â
And then another.Â
No attack is launched, thereâs no rush of air being displaced as the Aurora Watch follow them with their own teleportation. Though how they would have he doesnât know, not even Caleb has any idea where theyâve landed. Heâs just grateful it worked. A brief respite against the continuing horror. Nothing truly gained from this loop except he doesnât have to watch Essek die again.
He tightens his grip around Essek, ignoring the burn of a barely missed flurry of Eldritch Blasts across his back. The skin pulls in a familiar way, taught under the curled edges of his jacket. Itâll be gone with the sunset, as all injuries heâs acquired over the months have faded with the resetting day. He doesnât let it bother him as he would have done.   Â
âCaleb?â Essek murmurs into his shoulder tentatively. His fingers shake as they clutch at Calebâs shoulders tight enough to hurt.
Caleb chokes back a sob at the sound of his voice. He turns his head, nose pressing into Essekâs neck painfully as he squeezes the wizard tight to him. Itâs been far too long since he last heard Essek speak. The former shadowhand had always been silent on the dias, never pleading or begging for his life even on the few occasions Caleb had done so for him. He was always so resigned to his punishment, accepting his due with his head bowed and a silent scream as the spell struck him.Â
âYouâre okay,â Caleb reassures softly, though for Essekâs benefit or his own he couldnât rightly say.Â
Essek turns his head towards Caleb, struggling to put enough distance between them that he can catch Calebâs eyes but Calebâs grip is strong and Essek is weakened by weeks locked away before his public execution.Â
âYou fool!â Essek cries quietly against his skin, voice cracking like shattered glass. âYou complete fool, theyâll kill you!â
Caleb chuckles into Essekâs neck, the sound hollow and as brittle as he feels his mind is. Like the thin sheet of ice across a pond, snapping and cracking under the slow pressure of a foot waiting to drag him down in the cold dark water beneath.Â
âThis is nothing to laugh at,â Essek scolds him.
âIâve already died,â Caleb mutters, remembering the failed attempts and the few times he stood side by side with Essek upon the raised dais, fingers stretched out towards one another for the briefest touch of comfort.
âWhat?â
âSeveral times in fact.â Caleb continues in a matter of fact tone.Â
âYouâve gone mad,â Essek rolls his eyes and Caleb shakes his head slowly, savouring the way their noses bump together softly. No doubt Essek is recalling the few times the Mighty Nein have stumbled and fallen in their adventures and not the one memorable time Caleb got tackled out of a window by an Echo Knight trying to save Essekâs life for the umptenth time.Â
âI am stuck in some kind of loop, reliving this day over and over,â Caleb sighs and Essek tenses under him. Heâs quiet for a long time.Â
âWhat?â
âI have watched you dieâŚâ Calebâs voice fails him and he rests his forehead against Essekâs letting the warmth of his skin and his soft breaths against Calebâs lips pull him away from the teetering edge of his sanity.Â
âCaleb,â Essek whispers, his voice full of concern as his hands slide up Calebâs neck to cup his face gently.Â
âToo many times schatz, too many,â Caleb finishes brokenly and Essek flinches as a tear drops against his cheek. He gently rubs away the tears that follow as his breaths come in shaky controlled bursts.Â
âA time loop?â
âJa.â
Heâs quiet again as the implication settles in his academic mind and Caleb waits patiently for him. He has time, he has all the time in the world. He just canât seem to do what he wants with it.Â
âHelp me up,â Essek demands quietly and Caleb canât deny him anything though he doesnât particalurly wish to lose the closeness. He stumbles to his feet, keeping a tight hold on Essek as they stand shakily in the evening light. The clearing is touched by morning frost that the dayâs light hasnât managed to melt and the mountain range in the distance is vaguely familiar to Caleb but he has no interest in finding out why. Heâs more focussed on the man before him. Essek is thinner than he had been before the arrest, his skin a pale sickly lilic instead of itâs usual rich violet. Dark, violent splotches of deep red peek out from under the ill fitting uniform and Caleb shies away from the desire to burn the dungeons and its guards to ash. It would be so easy to seek revenge, so gratifying.Â
The lack of consequences has been a temptation he has fought against for a while now, one that has only grown in strength the more times heâs been forced to watch Essek fall. Caleb isnât sure how much longer he can last. How many more loops before he stops caring about the collateral damage? How many more before he stops being a man his friends can recognise?Â
âYou didnât start this?â Caleb checks, though heâs long suspected a third partyâs hand in this.Â
Essek raises his manacled wrists, the runes etched into the dark silver cuffs catching the fading light, âI couldnât even if Iâd wanted to.â
âThen who?â Caleb groans, letting his forehead rest against Essekâs again. His fingers clench and relax around Essekâs biceps, marvelling at the twitch of the muscles and warmth of his skin through the threadbare prison clothes. Physical proof that Essek lives and breathes in his arms, if only for a moment.Â
âAn enemy? Someone who wants me to suffer,â Essek suggests.
âAnd me,â Caleb adds and Essek inhales shakily.Â
âCalebâŚâ
âYes?â Caleb asks, hopeful.Â
For a moment the world pauses, possibility frozen on the edge of a cliff and all they have to do is step away from the solid ground beneath them to reach it. Essekâs mouth opens with intent before he thinks better of it, his fingers clench in a tight fist against Calebâs chest. Touching but not grasping at him as he so clearly wants to do, â...We should figure out how to break this time loop,â he offers eventually, sounding defeated and frustrated with himself.Â
Caleb feels a tendril of disappointment but he remembers that Essek does not have the benefit of time that Caleb has endured. For Essek itâs been a day, for Caleb, heâs had months to develop the courage to face the truth of his own heart. He simply needs time. Time Caleb so depesratly wants to give him.Â
âIâve been trying, nothing has worked.â
âWould my work be of any use?â
âNot even the Aurora Watch can get past your wards, it would take me-â
âThe password is nein, speak it clearly and the door to my private study will open,â Essekâs cheeks darken as he avoids Calebâs eyes. It warms Calebâs heart that Essek trusts the Nein to protect his lifeâs work and then his heart cracks a little as he realises how they canât even protect Essekâs life.Â
âJa, I can do that,â he says, swallowing thickly against the torrent of emotions storming his chest.Â
Essek coughs, clearing his throat and the air of the momentairy vulnerability, âIf thatâs of no use then youâll need to seek additional allies.âÂ
âIâve already told the otherâs, how do you think I got close enough to do this, this time?â Caleb smirks sharply, the day may be the same but the chaos his friends unleash every time is completely unique and somewhat enjoyable.Â
âI meant experts,â Essek corrects softly with a fond small smile, no doubt recalling the circumstances around his escape.Â
âYouâre the expert.â
âAnd yet, I can not recall such a spell,â Essek admits, brow furrowed.Â
âYou expect others to know when you donât?â
âItâs possible,â Essek says and he sounds as though he believes it as much as Caleb.Â
âAnd if that fails?â Caleb asks because he canât watch Essek turn to dust again, he canât, he just canât. He needs something, anything to keep him away from the dias.
Even though he knows heâll go again and again so Essek wonât be alone. Because the thought of Essek standing there waiting for the end and thinking Caleb has forsaken him and convincing himself he deserves it in his final moments, is almost worse than the pain of watching him turn to ash to be caught in the wind.Â
âDivine intervention?â Essek snorts and Caleb canât help but feel a lead weight fall into his gut as even Essek struggles to find more than a couple of vague ideas and a possible dead end.Â
âIf thatâs what it takes,â Caleb whispers and it sounds like a promise.Â
âCaleb,â Essek says, like the prayer of a man with no faith in any god, just faith in the man before him. It feels like benediction. It feels like false hope. An empty temple with cold pews. Caleb has failed so many times, so many people, that Essek standing before him feels more like another sacrifice on a blood stained altar than a blessing.Â
And yet he continues, hoping for a different outcome each time.Â
âSunâs down, timeâs almost up,â Caleb says, feeling the cold settle in his bones again as the shadows grow around them. A silent scream full of dread lodges itself in his throat.Â
Not again, not again, not again, please not again⌠he buries the words deep down and they claw and tear at him as he does. These wounds stay, even as the day resets and he knows eventually heâll bleed out.
Essek clutches at him tightly, as though Caleb is going anywhere, âIf you find a way to break this, do it.â
âI will,â Caleb promises and Essek shakes his head slowly.
âEven if I donât survive this,â he says gently and Caleb recoils as though heâs been struck.Â
âNein-â
Essek holds fast, grabbing at Calebâs face, the manacles clinking together like the chimes of a clock, âYes, yes. I will not have you suffer needlessly for a lost cause.â
âEssek-â
âPromise me Caleb, promise me,â Essek begs and Caleb opens his eyes and stares into Essekâs. He lets him see the fire within, the rage and anguish and most importantly the steel core that will not bend, not even to Essekâs pleading. Caleb would rather lose himself than give up.Â
âNein,â Caleb growls firmly.Â
âCaleb-â Essekâs voice catches and Caleb crushes Essek to him, slamming their lips together in a brutal kiss full of desperation and despair. He wonât make that promise. He canât make that promise. Even if heâs crumbling under the weight of it all, he can not let Essek die. Not when thereâs a chance, no matter how slim, that he can save him. Caleb can not and will not bury another person he loves.Â
Essek struggles against him for a moment before surrendering with a choked sob, his fingers curling tightly in Calebâs stained shirt as he kisses him back just as fiercely. Caleb ignores the tears they both shed, they have just a moment together and thenâŚthen Caleb has work to do.Â
wip wednesday swings round again, here's some more from the edge of the blade
A few streets away from the Bastion, Calebâs hand falls away from Essekâs back leaving him oddly bereft. As though Caleb acted as an anchor keeping him from floating away. He almost reaches out, stopping himself with only a minor twitch to show how close he came to impropriety. Something that has become alarmingly common around the Mighty Nein.
Caleb quickly retrieves a thin copper wire from his pocket, oblivious to Essekâs inner turmoil.
âVeth, inform the others quickly, Essek and I are handfasted, answer no further questions when pressed, I will explain later,â Caleb mutters into the wire, he folds it away into one of his pockets and winces at the reply he receives. No doubt loud, full of demands and exceeding the scope of the spellâs ability as per the usual.
âThey will have many questions,â Essek points out unnecessarily, he just wishes to fill the thick silence that's haunted their steps with something.
âJa, loud and demanding questions.â Caleb smiles fondly at the thought before turning his inquisitive gaze on Essek, âBut I shall ask my own first.â
Essek sighs and draws a deep breath, straightening his spine and folding his hands under his cloak in his usual courtly way. He stares straight ahead and adressing the street as though he was stood in the great hall and not beside a man who had saved his skin more than a few times.
âMy mother has apparently grown tired of my long leash, it was an attempt to chain me to a position she could better controlâŚIâŚpanicked,â Essek admitted haltingly through gritted teeth.
âYou?â Caleb teases with a cocked eyebrow.
âYes me,â Essek responds in a tone that suggests Caleb drop any further attempts to mock him. Though he knows itâs futile to try with any member of the Mighty Nein, âI had not expected such a blatant move from her. Sheâs executed it well, I was trapped,â Essek finishes. He is (albeit begrudgingly) impressed by his motherâs machinations. He might have even applauded them, had they not been directed at him.
âThen I am glad to have sprung you from your intended imprisonment,â Caleb says with a soft smile.
âCaleb, I owe you greatly for this deception.â
âNein, you needed help mein freund.â
Essek stops him with a hand on his arm, startling them both. He almost jerks away from the contact before Calebâs hand snaps down on top of his, keeping it in place. Essek clears his throat and - with difficulty - draws his eyes away from their joined hands, âThank you. Truly, thank you.â
Calebâs hand squeezes his hand gently, he starts to reply when something catches his eye down the street. Thereâs a flicker to Calebâs smile, like a candleâs lit wick caught in a sudden breeze. A snap, gone in the blink of an eye leaving no trace, if not for the new tension Caleb carries. He pulls Essekâs hand to his lips, placing a chaste kiss on the knuckles instead of continuing their conversation.
Calebâs lips are dry and a touch rough but the spark that shoots through Essekâs arm at their touch is sharp and almost painful.
âWe are being watched,â Caleb whispers against the skin, gaze flicking down the road and Essek swallows thickly and forces a smile of his own and shifts closer to Caleb. He quells the desire to look for their would-be persurers. His motherâs men? Or perhaps Den Tasitharâs? Either way someone moved quickly and Essekâs window to breathe just got quite a bit smaller.
âTo the Xhorhaus?â
âJa,â Caleb says as he links arms with Essek and leads them back to the Neinâs home.

i can't wait for wip wednesday to roll around so here, have some more fake married au special (now with title and tag for easy searching woo)
the edge of the blade
Caleb opens the door and not two steps over the threshold they are covered in confetti accompanied by a loud bang as the Mighty Nein cheer. Essek reaches for his component pouch in a flash, Caleb hand snaps out and grabs his wrist tightly, halting him from accidentally hurting one of their friends.
âUnwise to startle two wizards friends,â Caleb chides them, Fjord has the decency to look a little contrite though tired. As though the half-orc had already tried to warn his friends and ultimately failed to convince them of the folly.
âWhat the fuck is going on?!â Veth screeches and Jester snaps another party popper to let loose a slightly wilted spray of coloured paper towards them. Essek notes the hastily put together banner, a repurposed bed sheet by the look of things, dangling between Yasha and Caduceusâ hands. It looks as though Jester attempted something tasteful to begin with before time inevitably ran out and she then threw a bottle of glitter over the top of it almost obscuring the congratulatory message entirely. It would be charming under any other circumstance.
âCongratulations! How was the honeymoon?â Jester waggles her eyebrows suggestively and Caleb sighs deeply.
Essek wisely shuts the door behind them, with the thick wood to act as a barrier to the outside world he feels marginally safer. It offers an illusion of privacy and secrecy, though Essek isnât fool enough to completely relax. They probably have a few minutes' grace before the spies descend and given the Mighty Neinâs propensity for jesting - often led by Jester herself - theyâll need every second of that grace period to convince them.
âWe are not married Blueberry, Essek was in need of help,â Caleb informs her, a touch of fondness to his exasperation.
âIs that what the kids are calling it these days,â Beauregard smirk has a distinct leer to it and Calebâs shoulders slump significantly in defeat as Fjord elbows Beau meaningfully and Veth and Jester talk over one another to demand details. Vethâs more pointed questions an opposing force to Jesterâs more pornographic enquires but no less insistent.
âď¸ for @hirikkaâ happy holidays! i hope you enjoy! âď¸

âYou stink,â Lambert declared, throwing a book into Jaskierâs chest with enough force to expel the air from his lungs sharply.Â
For a few comical seconds Jaskier juggled two books as he tried to catch his breath again. Once his equilibrium was restored he stared at the witcher a bit confused as his words sunk in.Â
With exaggerated care Jaskier put aside his own reading in favour of his newly acquired projectile. He surreptitiously attempted to sniff at his armpit as he flipped the worn leather wrapped journal between his hands. It was soft to the touch and the paper was dried and yellowed with age, clearly one of the older entries in the library.Â
âAnd a book will help me...not stink?â Jaskier asked with a quirked eyebrow. Lambert snorted and rolled his eyes.Â
âNo dumbass, you stink of feelings,â Lambert explained forcefully.
Jaskier sighed, no wonder he had to practically start from scratch with Geraltâs communicating skills come spring. Spending an entire season with one brother who spent most of his time with his beloved goat and the other whoâs vocabulary seemed to consist almost entirely of curses that would make a Islander blush, frankly it was a miracle his witcher hadnât reverted back to grunts every spring. He loved them all dearly but given half a chance not a single one of them would interact with the local populace socially.Â
âA word of advice, your everyday folk canât smell emotions and donât appreciate being told they stink,â Jaskier offered, slipping easily into his lecturer voice, usually reserved for his students.Â
âUnlike the white wolf I donât give a fuck about who I piss off,â Lambert muttered as he crossed his arms defensively over his chest.Â
Jaskier recognised the youngest witcherâs growing discomfort and switched away from his teacher mode in favour of something that wouldnât remind Lambert of darker childhood days within the keep, âSo what have my emotions done to offend you?â
âYouâre sad.â
âAm not,â Jaskier retorted childishly and Lambert chuckled.Â
âYou are, itâs annoying.â
Jaskier fumed over the futility of arguing with Lambert who could rival himself in the stubbornness department. Besides he wasnât wrong per se, Jaskier wasnât at his best. He loved Kaer Morhen and the witchers but he found his days a little⌠empty. There wasnât much in the way he could offer as the inhumanly strong witchers had the annual repairs well in hand and Jaskier was more of a hindrance than a help. He was starting to wonder if Geralt regretted bringing him to the keep instead of leaving him at Oxenfurt as was their norm as there didnât seem to be much he could contribute to Kaer Morhenâs general upkeep. Â
âListen, you canât keep up. Youâre humanâŚwe think,â he mumbled the last part quietly to himself but before Jaskier could question that particular little tid-bit, Lambert continued on, âand thereâs enough dick measuring going on without adding your twig self into the midst. Geralt would get all upset if you got broken trying to âprove yourselfâ.â
âIs there a point here or are you attempting to rival Yen when it comes to cutting remarks?â Jaskier asked, his jaw stiff as he gritted his teeth and tried to ignore the sharp pain in his gut.Â
âOne; Iâm more awesome than the witch any day of the week,â Lambert smirked cockily as he held up a finger. Jaskier snorted, heâd have liked to see Lambert say that in front of Yen, âand two; my point is I remembered this damn journal. Proof you arenât the first fragile human to winter at our glorious castle.â
Jaskier faltered, âWait, what?â
âThe book dumbass, some witcher back in the day brought along his bardic friend,â Lambert waggled his eyebrows suggestively. Jaskier rolled his eyes at the unsubtle implication.Â
âAnd this is important because?â
âItâs proof youâve got your uses.â
âAs a bed warmer?â Jaskier questioned, his voice rising towards a dangerous pitch.Â
Lambert switched from teasing to freaking out in the blink of an eye as he looked around a little as though he expected Geralt to appear out of nowhere to defend Jaskierâs honour. Considering how often the witchers tackled one another from the shadows, it was a fair concern.Â
âNo asshole! Thatâs not what I meant,â Lambert shouted and Jaskier let the tension slip away, he had enough experience with witchers who struggled to get their thoughts across to hold a grudge against Lambert for some badly worded suggestionsâŚyet.Â
âOkay? Then what did you mean?â
âYouâreâŚuseful,â Lambert said bluntly and rather anticlimactically, looking a little dead in the eyes as though he wished to be anywhere but here. Jaskier could relate.
âThankâŚyou?âÂ
âJust read the damn thing and stop being mopey,â Lambert sighed and stormed off into the dark and drafty keep, leaving Jaskier confused but oddly touched by the exchange. He was starting to recognise it as the usual when it came to the most abrasive member of the wolf witchers.Â
Jaskier shrugged and settled back into the overstuffed wingback chair that Geralt had dropped in front of the large roaring fire just for him. He opened the well worn journal and flipped through a couple of the dried pages a little blase before the words started to sink in. It took him a moment to realise just why they caught his attention.Â
Lyrics.Â
Actual lyrics. Albeit written out like a story instead of the traditional poetry format familiar to all in his field but still, a song. He hunched over the book, skimming with more focus. One, two, eight, ten. Each page had at least one distinct song dutifully scratched into the paper with a careful hand. Not a bardâs hand but a witcher, one who found the words worthy of remembering.Â
It was clear from the blocky child-like scrawl that letters were not the unnamed witcherâs strong suit but there they were, pages upon pages of work to carefully document the fleeting life of his bardic companion. A truly epic love letter if Jaskier ever saw.Â
Jaskier felt the tell-tale prickle of tears as he caught sight of the most recent entries, half way through the book. In fresh ink, each letter softly etched into the rough parchment, where his own words. His own lyrics. Saved for future readers perhaps centuries down the line.Â
There was no mistaking the handwriting. Jaskier would know that hand anywhere, even without itâs usual almost illegible tilt. Geralt, doing his best to be neat and tidy and lovingly commit Jaskierâs lifeâs work into a journal that would more than likely outlive them all.Â
The time and effort it took was worth more than all the standing ovations of his career and Jaskier felt warm to his very core.
âJaskier?âÂ
Jaskierâs head snapped up. Speak of the devil, he thought to himself trying not to laugh out loud at the absurdity of the situation. Geralt watched him with a frown, clearly noting the tears that had slipped Jaskierâs notice. Not that he was surprised by them, heâd just been handed the very physical proof of Geraltâs often hidden feelings for him.Â
âAre you alright?â Geralt asked and Jaskier gently shut the journal and set it aside, he stroked the soft leather before he stood.Â
âBetter than alright,â Jaskier said, smiling as he sniffled a little. He slipped a hand around the back of Geraltâs neck, drawing him into a soft warm kiss trying to show how much he loved Geralt in return in the act.Â
uhm, for your prompts: geraskier, with jaskier hiding geralt (and maybe ciri) from nilfgaard in plain sight, like. without magic, he manages to make the soldiers go away with empty hands? thank you!
sorry this took longer than expected! i havenât been feeling very well recently so it got left alone for a while. hope you like it though!

âYou there!â
âOh fuck,â Jaskier mutters sharply recognising the no nonsense tone of a solider and feeling the dread settle in his gut like a block of ice.Â
Geraltâs fingers twitch at his side, his swords are sadly tucked away under Roachâs blanket just under Ciriâs leg for safekeeping as she sits astride the saddle.Â
Theyâd been reluctantly placed there - at Jaskierâs suggestion - so they could move through town unhindered by locals looking for a Witcherâs aid or at least so the trio could draw a little less attention than they normally would. Something they might have gotten away with if Geralt hadnât been sour about hiding his swords so much heâd childishly left down his hood. Revealing his rather distinctive and famous white hair for all the land to see. Â
And now there are soldiers.
So the idea of going incognito had clearly failed in itâs execution and now Geralt is without his weapons in easy reach as the squelch of many heavy boots marching through the mud approach them from behind.Â
Jaskier watches out of the corner of his eye as Geraltâs hand releases the reins for Roachâs bridle and skims along her flank to the hidden pommel slowly. Jaskier shakes his head in warning and thankfully the Witcher listens, stilling his hand.Â
The last thing they need is more attention and Geralt beheading the local guardsmen would be like sending up a flare for Nilfgaard.Â
Jaskier chews on his lip, racking his brain for a way out of their predicament. He seeâs Geraltâs hand move again, not for the swords this time but to rest on Ciriâs shaking knee in comfort. The princess huddles under her cloak, shrinking away from the danger approaching them and Jaskierâs heart aches for her. The lingering trauma of being hunted has left a stain on the once happy princess that Jaskier and Geralt have tried their best to erase. But situations like these always undo that hard work in moments. Â
Jaskier sighs at the loss of progress shrinking deeper into the folds of her cloak and decides on a course of action, one that might just avoid darkening that stain on Ciriâs heart.Â
âOi! You deaf?â Another voice yells and Jaskier straightens his spine and prepares to dazzle his audience into submission.Â
He spins round dramatically, plastering a wide happy grin across his face. Itâs not his most eye-catching outfit but he should be able to draw attention away from the Witcher and his child surprise well enough. Presentation is key for misdirection after all.Â
Jaskier glances over the small patrol quickly, filing away the small details that he can use to his advantage. Just like any other ballroom or tavern heâs stepped foot in. Reading the room is how you own it and Jaskier wouldnât be a famous bard if he couldnât quickly and effectively discern the lay of the land. A loud tavern full of boisterous laughter needs dance music and bawdy songs, a noble wedding with dignified guests needs jaunty jigs with easy beats to dance to and when enough wine has been drunk, a few romantic epics to get everyone in the mood. The stage is a little different but the details are the same.Â
He silently curses as he recognises the dark armour and golden sun stretching across it and prays to whatever deity likes Geralt in one piece in the vain hope that things will go smoothly. But for now, it's up to him and every skill heâs honed at every banquet and party heâs ever been to, to get them through this peacefully.Â
âFine gentlemen, what can I aid such noble soldiers with today?â he greets loudly as he skips forward putting himself between the approaching soldiers and Geralt. A few of the men flinch at his volume. Jaskier notes the overly red cheeks and bloodshot eyes, the slight sway in their stance. Too much patrolling the tavern rather than the streets and very recently too. Â
He has to play this right. Be loud and obnoxious and theyâll want to get rid of him quickly to ease their aching heads. Too much though and he runs the risk of raising questions. Itâll be a fine line to tread, a thin tightrope between freedom and a noose but itâs something heâs managed before and for far lesser stakes.Â
âYour friend, where does he hail from?â The Captain asks shrewdly, eyeing Geraltâs exposed white hair with narrowed eyes. Jaskier rocks on his heels full of nervous energy.Â
âMy cousin you mean? Well he and his daughter come from Lettenhove of course! As do I,â Jaskier bows deeply, throwing as much theatricality into his performance as possible, âJulian Alfred Pankratz, Viscount de Lettenhove. A pleasure to meet you, good sir!â
He doesnât often drag out his nobility but the situation calls for it. Perhaps enough for the men to back off, in fear of upsetting nobility.Â
âAnd your...cousinâs white hair? A familial trait?â The captain asks skeptically. His title isnât enough to brush away their questions but there is a touch more hesitancy than before so Jaskier counts it in his favour. He still grimaces a little and racks his brain for a plausible lie to help them escape the situation with as little screaming and entrails as possible. Tiny streams in deep forests are not ideal for removing Nilfgaardian guts from a Witcherâs hair after all and after this fiasco getting Geralt to agree to enter any form of civilisation will be a nightmare.Â
So Jaskier does what he does best.Â
He tells a story.Â
He lets his face drop into a more serious expression and sidles up closer, a little too close for comfort, for a not so much conspiratorial whisper, âNo, no, my good sir. Not at all. You see, it's such a terrible thing. Truly terrible. A curse.â
At least two of the men take an involuntary step back as though such a thing could be catching. Good, Jaskier thinks snidely, superstitious morons swallow a lie father easier than a wise man.Â
âTwas laid upon him by a spiteful sorceress. Heâs quite sensitive over the whole thing as Iâm sure you can imagine,â Jaskier placed a hand over his heart as he hammed up the performance a degree or two, âMy poor dear sweet cousin spurned the witches advances you see, his heart already belonged to another. Fionaâs mother, she hailed from Nilfgaard, such a sweet woman. Not that it mattered to the spiteful witch! The sorceress was quite enraged by it all and so cursed my poor cousin to bear the likeness of the ugliest creature she knew, a Witcher.â
Jaskier winces internally and sends a silent apology to Geralt and hopes the man wonât take too much offence but thereâs no other option for them.Â
âHow unfortunate,â one of the men comments in a heartfelt manner and Jaskier dabs at his dry eye in agreement.
âYes it is and such happenstance that we should be looking for a Witcher,â the Captain says, unconvinced. But Jaskier has the rest of his audience on tenterhooks and a crowd can sway a single mind.
He scoffâs loudly and slams his hands onto his hips.Â
âNothing but trouble I say, for weâve been stopped by every knight and good soldier from here to the Pontar! Itâs made our journey to Oxenfurt doubly long and Iâm due to begin teaching next week! The delay!â Jaskier wails dramatically and the men collectively wince at his volume and shrillness, âThankfully with my tenured position the faculty will be most forgiving of my lateness! But truly it has been nothing but trouble!â
âHmm,â the Captain wavers and Jaskier pushes his advantage, leaning in a touch too far again.Â
âI shall tell you good sir the best way to tell a Witcher from my unfortunate cousin is the swords, for Witcherâs carry two on their backs and my dear sweet cousin can only swing a pitchfork!â
âViscountâs right Captain, no swords,â one of the men speaks up and they all turn to look at Geraltâs back, covered in a muddy cape but bereft of the notable twin swords.Â
âHe could have thrown them,â the Captain suggests but quietly, not fully believing his own words and Jaskier tries not to let his relief show.Â
âThrown them?! Why my dear Captain, that would be a waste of fine silver and steel! Who in their right mind would throw away a silver sword! Pah! A fool, thatâs who!âÂ
The Captain ruminates for a few moments and then nods, âRight you are, carry on mâlord.â
Jaskierâs knees feel a little weak as the men shuffle round and begin their march back up the street they came. He waves them off jauntily despite the nausea swirling in his gut.Â
âMany blessings to you and safe journey my good men!â
As soon as the men are out of sight Jaskier stumbles as the relief falls on him like a ton of bricks. Geralt grips his bicep, pulling him back up as he stares down the street after the patrol.Â
âGone?â Jaskier asks and Geralt nods.Â
âThank Melitele,â Jaskier exhales and drops his head against Geraltâs shoulder heavily.Â
âUgliest creatures?â Geralt asks and Jaskier groans.
âDarling I apologise wholeheartedly for such a lie but how else was I to excuse your appearance?â
Geralt snorts, thankfully with more amusement than anger, âGood thinking.â
âThank you love but might I suggest putting several fields between us and them before more questions are asked?â Jaskier points out and Geralt wraps an arm around Jaskierâs shoulders, squeezing him close for a moment before letting him stand on his own steadying legs.Â
Geralt takes Roachâs reins once more as Jaskier falls into step next to him, he spares a glance over his shoulder at the near empty street behind them and hopes they can put enough road between the patrol and them before nightfall to breathe a little easier.Â
âAre you really a viscount Jaskier?â Ciri questions quietly, hunched over under her heavy cape atop Roach. Jaskier startles at the sudden question but settles into a sardonic smile.
âUnfortunately so my darling, though the title does have its uses here and there.â
Ciri thankfully doesnât press the issue as she flicks her gaze over her shoulder worridily. More concerned with the soldiers than his checkered past.Â
âI didnât think theyâd leave so easily,â she mumbles and Jaskier reaches over to pat her leg softly.Â
âFear not my dear, they were easy to fool and wonât be following us anytime soon.â
âHow can you be so sure?â Ciri asks, her tone skeptical and a little sharp. A princess on the run yes, but still a princess and one growing from a child into a woman and not shy about demanding she be treated as such. Jaskier chuckles.Â
âSimple. I saw all I needed to, to lead them astray. Iâll teach you how to read men like open books soon enough darling,â Jaskier winks and Ciri worried at her bottom lip for a few quiet moments.
âTeach me now?âÂ
Jaskier shares a glance with Geralt, raising an eyebrow up in question and Geralt simply nods his permission. Well if his Witcher is okay with it then who is he to argue giving the young exiled princess another knife in her growing arsenal.Â
âVery well, what did you notice about them?âÂ
She ponders for a moment, âThere werenât that many?â Ciri offers hesitantly. Jaskier beams encouragingly.Â
âWell spotted! A small patrol left in an unremarkable town. Tells us quite a bit. These fools arenât high on the pecking order. They arenât given more responsibility or better yet arenât trusted with more,â Jaskier explains and Ciri leans forward in rapt attention. âWhat else could you see?âÂ
âThey hesitated,â Geralt says and Jaskier turns his attention on the Witcherâs soft smile.Â
âVery good my love,â Jaskier pecks Geraltâs cheek in reward, earning a giggle from Ciri.Â
âThat matters?â she asks.Â
âIndeed, a lack of confidence speaks to their inexperience or perhaps theyâve acted hastily in the past and been reprimanded making them hesitant to act similarly again,â Jaskier explains, falling into his old teaching habits easily.Â
âWhat else did you see,â Ciri questions curiously and Jaskier hums thoughtfully.Â
âDented armour that hasnât yet been fixed, means coin is tight or flowing elsewhere. Mud caked into clothes and bulging chest plates. These men have become lazy and spend more nights in a tavern than marching around town. Ruddy cheeks and bloodshot eyes tell me they enjoy their drink, a bit too much most likely. Given the hour it was either a heavy night of drinking with a spectacular hangover or theyâve just come from the tavern. Whichever it is, their minds and body long for beds not battle and that my fair girl is where you can take advantage,â Jaskier lists and Ciri looks suitably impressed with his observations.Â
âEnough to confuse them?â
âPerhaps enough to lose them in a winding tale with dramatic flair,â Jaskier shrugs, remembering many a glazed drunken gaze and how he used it to his advantage in the past.Â
âThe loudness helped too,â Geralt offers slyly and Ciri laughs as Jaskier pretends to take offence though he preens at the small but fond smile on his Witcherâs face and the ease settling around Ciriâs shoulders once more.Â
âNothing makes a drunken soldier recoil quicker than a loud bright bard,â Jaskier winks.
