sometimes true love is a half dozen cats in a cottage, a library of deadly and crimes-against-gods magic books and the exandrian equivalent of a green card marriage to keep your wanted criminal of a life partner out of fantasy jail all while you flip off your own country's government and mi6 from a lecture hall in front of the impressionable young minds of said country teaching them how be gay and do crime on the empires paycheck
seen so many posts about the parallels between orpheus and eurydice to olruggio and qifrey and now its living in my brain rent free spinning around like a rotisserie chicken.
like when you really think about it, its orpheus and eurydice x 100 on the heartbreak scale
cause orpheus only got to go the underworld once
olruggio keeps going back and never remembers turning around to avoid losing qifrey again and again and again and -
eurydice knew she was loved in that moment, loved in every step to and from the underworld, qifrey knows its that very love that will always deliver him into death again and again.
neither change the story.
olruggio keeps going to hell for qifrey and qifrey keeps following olruggio towards his own death. the idea of doing anything else is impossible. their love is so fundamental to themselves, so ingrained into their very bones, that its rescuing and raising and teaching children, its making snugstones out of kindness, it keeps defying a spell that wipes the slate clean, keeps holding a parasite at bay against all the odds, they made a home together, with each other, they are each others home.
its the myth told over and over again for centuries to come.
orpheus and eurydice get to love each again and again in every retelling, qifrey and olruggio are living it. the love was there, it mattered, they're still doomed, but they love each other enough to keep doing it regardless.
i want ya'll to know i'm going to be absolutely insufferable about my two fave purples and their wizard when they start airing
so many neat details im noticing during my reread
like how qifrey looks so relaxed as soon as he recognises olruggios spell
olruggios glove to protect himself from the fire spell
and how alairas hair kind of has the shape/look of sasaran the brimmed cap that transformed euini. sort of a gentle reflection, one transformed and hurt him, the other intends to save and protect him.
a mirror to the coco qifrey/iguin dynamic
this series has so much to it aaaaa

manga chap 90+ spoilers below as i continue my reread
the way he's just...do you ever get hit by the fact that at times, qifrey probably does things like this to feel what it will be like to be the tree. probably attempting to find some manner of peace in the idea of it beyond the terror of it. a place for the birds to rest and make their nests, something peaceful after the fact. i dunno, these panels just made me a little sad this time. he looks sad here, that kind of grieving sadness that makes you smile, where it hurts but theres some silver lining to it. i wonder how often he does something like this and thinks about the silverwood and the big what if that follows, i wonder how often he hopes
im doing a reread of wha (pretty much directly after finishing all the chapters cause i have zero chill and im head over heels for this series) and im at the part where they have their first visit to the starry sword and qifrey is discussing the tree and i just got hit with a few thoughts all at once
[spoilers up to ch 96]
this panel scratches something in my brain
i realise coco is our narrative entry to the world so some level of ignorance is required just so we the reader can get answers to things but at the same time the idea that qifrey is essentially ignoring some aspects of the standard curriculum is just crunchy to me
its kinda wild to me that the academy set ups within the great hall don't appear to have a watchful eye. richehs former academy certainly appeared to lack one and eunis master also seemed to lack oversight to the point both qifrey and alaira seemed to be ready to report the man. maybe im missing a detail but the watchful eyes don't seem to assigned within the great hall. which is interesting...
the academy settings do have larger class sizes and a more government run education while the ateliers out and about dont seem to adhere to the government standard education and do require a watchful eye
something something the watchful eyes might not just be for the protection of children
im not trying to say the leadership of the witches is a dictorship but I do think shirahama is trying to say something about the dangers of their current system with the series as a whole and this little tidbit makes me wanna bite something
i dunno if this is anything overall but i do enjoy rebel qifrey essentially teaching anarchy that the great hall will only really discover its full extent when the girls are all grown up and let loose fulltime on the magical world, currently their behaviour can be explained away by the events they find themselves in, one day someone's going to realise that 'oh no they're just like that 24/7' and im looking forward to it
