Prizzi's Honor premiered on 13 June 1985, before wider release the following day.
Richard Condon (with Janet Roach) adapted Condon's 1982 novel, and 78-year-old John Huston directed. Huston hired 78-year-old Meta Carpenter Wilde as his script supervisor (she had been an uncredited "script clerk" on Huston's directorial debut, The Maltese Falcon in 1941) and 73-year-old Rudi Fehr (along with his daughter, Kaja Fehr) as editor (who had worked with Huston on 1946's Key Largo). Huston also cast his daughter Anjelica in the film (she had appeared in a handful of movies before then, but she wrote that she overheard a production worker say, "Her father is the director, her boyfriend's the star, and she has no talent.").
Prizzi's Honor was a commercial and critical success, and was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Jack Nicholson), Best Supporting Actor (William Hickey), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Costume Design.
Anjelica Huston received the film's only Oscar (Best Supporting Actress) for her performance.
