Let’s just assume that if you haven’t seen Thor 2, this entire post is spoilers.
A while ago, I read an awesome article about the “Strong Female Character” and how we think of femininity in cinema. You should all go read that article, but it basically states that having a single female character who’s a total badass (think Sarah Conner in Terminator 2) is not a Good Thing if that’s all Hollywood does. Men get to be Loki or Thor, Odin or Fandral, Heimdal or Ian the Intern. But women are either the talking blow-up doll or the amazon. We don’t get to be the scientists or the comic relief very often. (That’s starting, very slightly, to change, but the progress is glacial at best).
Then along came Thor, which not only passed the Bechdal Test in it’s first scene—within three minutes—but introduced us to Jane Foster. Natalie Portman is pretty (she’s an A-List actress, pretty sure attractiveness is a requirement). But Jane? Jane is an astrophysicist who lives in a trailer, works at what used to be a diner or a theater or something, and wears dumpy, frumpy plaid shirts and jeans. She’s not glamorous, she’s not “sexy” (and, holy shit, let me get to that one here in a minute), and she’s not a warrior princess.
(I should declaimer that, yes, I grew up on Xena and I love me some badass warrior women, but come on: variety, please.)
Jane is a nerd. Flat-out, socially awkward, genius nerd. And I adore her for that. In the best corners of fandom, Jane is a trekkie, who became what she is because she wanted to explore the stars. It fits with her character. She’s not physically strong, she’s not fashionable, and I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t know how to use a gun beyond “point and squeeze the trigger”.  Jane can’t stab a Jotun in the eye if her life depended on it (probably?) but by god, she will figure out a way to science the guy to death.
And that’s the point. A lot of women in the major blockbusters, even if they are super smart, have to be “sexy” too. It’s not enough to be a world-class computer hacker, she’s got to be packing about a pound of make-up and some stripper boots (oh hi, computer chick in Transformers). The casting directors said, “She’s got to be hot.” Even in Star Trek, which has a whopping two main female leads, they all have to be in make-up and miniskirts. (Why the f*ck are all the women in those movies in tiny-ass dresses? Nurses, starfleet cadets, starship captains? Gotta show them legs there, honey.)
Not Jane. Jane tells that shit to shove it (she seriously asks Odin who he thinks he is when he compares Thor bringing her to Asgard, to Thor bringing a goat to a banquet feast. It was beautiful.) She might not be able to swing a sword, but that doesn’t stop her from slapping Thor (twice) and Loki (once, but damn, it was a hard slap and she knew full well what he was capable of. Didn’t stop her).  And telling off the Allfather, who’s basically King of the Universe.
Now Sif? Sif is a badass. She’s the first person Thor posts to hold off the entire group of palace guards. I’m sure it was a thing of beauty to see. The Blunder article mentions that she’s around Thor constantly, she holds her own, has his back. And that’s true. And while appreciate that they’ve got a woman in that role (she’s not just a sex-kitten oh thank god) I find that type of character boring. (I value intelligence over strength, which is probably why Loki is my favorite character in anything, ever, hands down, oh god let me tell you about my feels in a later article.) Sif is great and all, and she can sure as shit hold her own in a fight, but it was Jane who saved the universe.
The nerd saved the universe. Think about that.
I mean, yes, Thor did the heavy work and nearly died and all and was the one capable of beating the crap out of Malekith, but it would have been to no avail if it wasn’t for Jane (he wouldn’t have even gotten that far if it wasn’t for Jane and her Awkward Date’s phone call). It was Jane who figured out how to trigger the portals (and there was no cake). It was Jane who figured out where they needed to go. Sif is great at stabbing things, but she wouldn’t have been able to do that.
Thor saved Jane a few times, but Jane saved the freaking universe.
Nerd beats warrior.
So yeah. While Sif might be (to some) the more attractive of the two women, and she might be technically stronger and all, I’m glad Jane is the leading lady. It’s nice to see a nerd girl on the big screen, doing her stuff and slapping gods and eating toast and geeking out over alien technology.
