Babies love books! And the best thing we can do for infants and toddlers to promote literacy and language development is read aloud to them. Session Two...

During this session, our first full Saturday session (ouch...I'm clearly still in Undergrad mode) included a really interesting guest speaker. Author Jane Blatt who shared with us her new children's book, Books Always Everywhere and the editorial process that helped put her book on the shelves which was interestingly not as smooth as sometimes authors let on! However it was a really interesting insight into the authors dealings with the publisher, illustrators and everyone involved in the publishing business.

We also did an exercise to get us into the mindset of how children might play with a book, recognising that the age range for her book is for young children being around 1+. We were given a variety of objects and asked to think about if the object was a book what a child would most likely do with it, most of the responses were usually about the object being eaten, thrown or broken in some way which I feel was fairly accurate as a lot of my classmates have much more experience with young children than I do. This then prompted us to think about the way books are produced and we then looked at large books, very very large books and then very small book, small enough to fit onto a key chain, one of them was one of my favourite books The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

I really love this, enough to want it for myself!

This part of the session was very fun and interactive and again I very much enjoyed hearing about the way a book undergoes changes during the editorial process and how the illustrator and author are involved in the final production of the book.

As to the actual article that accompanied this session I will again refer to some of the questions provided however this might be revisited as this text is a base text and will need to be reread to my utmost joy. Right to Carrington and Marsh, at present after just reading the text I feel a bit overworked in article terms, so for the time being I think I will post about the article further into the journal after I have had time to think about it a bit more...
