What did you think of the alternate universes in āSkipperā? :)
First off, uhh, sucks that the first universe he jumps to is just one where everyone immediately dies all over again. So much for that plan. Loved seeing Holly again though :)
Secondly, in the what Iām going to call the Rat universe, a: The rat costume reveal and Danny John Jules voice for it was probably the hardest I laughed all season. Every time I see that costume I just erupt into a burst of giggles all over again and I canāt even explain why this:
fills me with so much delight and merriment. Even looking at it now Iām laughing. Maybe itās because Iāve had pet rats for a solid chunk of my life and the not so little coat just really gets me every time. Maybe itās the way DJJ moves in it. Maybe itās the hyperrealism of it, like, yeah, thatās what a giant upright rat would look like. I would wear this costume I love it so much absolutely primo comedy.Ā
More on the Rat universe: Iād live there. I love rats. Having the ship overrun with giant rats with human intelligence sounds just fine to me.
B: I would love to know more about the background of posh Lister and his dynamic with that universes Rimmer. I would like to know more about the other universes Rimmers in general. Iām assuming they all had relatively similar personalities because no one was like, super put off by how our Rimmer acted, but that might be a bad assumption. (Also I hate Listerās mustache)
Tons oā Listers universe: I love Lister as much as the next person (possibly more) but I couldnāt handle that level of noise either. Iām out.
Talking Head Rimmer: WHAT is the story behind how that wouldāve happened??? I GOTTA know. In my ideal world I get supplemental material for this episode going into more background for each universe but also I kind of doubt some of the smaller gag universes like this one have been fully thought through.Ā
Cult(?) Universe: finally a place where for the Lows. Terrifying, would not stay there, do not like it.
Hodgepodge of unseen universes: Jesus how many skips did Rimmer do? Also, I want to know if the colors of everything changed in the Blue Dwarf or if literally the only difference was they decided to paint it blue instead of red. I also think it would be funny if they literally just decided to paint it blue instead of red and that somehow led to a cascade effect that resulted in a RADICALLY different universe.Ā
and last but also most interesting:
Officer Rimmer and Captain Lister:Ā
I want more time in this universe I wanna see them progress to officer and captain status I wanna see how well Lister acts as a Captain I wanna meet Rimmerās kids I wanna now how Kristine is doing in this universe I want the DETAILS. In my heart I like to believe that Lister and Rimmer get along in this universe (like they seem to in most alternate universes....funny how that one works wink wonk) and they helped each other study and get to the advanced positions that they achieved. I want to know if Lister actually was driven to be Captain or if he just kind of went along for the ride and figured he might as well, because he definitely started as third technician. Did he lose the Scouse accent as time went on or did he have the posh accent in the first place? I want to know MORE. Also wild that this universe confirms that everyone in the ship wouldāve actually lived if Lister hadnāt gone into stasis. Probably would be best not to tell our Lister that, heās already dealing with Enough as it is.Ā
While Iām fascinated by this universe I do have some HOT TAKES incoming:
Hate the stripper wife thing with Captain Lister. Gross, couldāve done without it, will be ignoring it as canon and prefer to believe itās Lister just fucking with Rimmer.
Rimmer celebrated being married with four sons like it was a big dream of his and Iām calling absolute b u l l s h i t. Having four kids and a wife that we donāt even know likes him would be his absolute nightmare. Even if we DIDNāT know that it is almost identical to his nightmare scenario fromĀ āBetter than lifeā having four sons would be, just, WAY too reminiscent of his father. Plus, since he was the youngest of four boys you KNOW that would drudge up bad childhood memories and yeah itās bullshit. Thatās at least part of why Rimmer was likeĀ āIām out.ā
Also as much as Iām fascinated by this universe I, much like our Rimmer secretly does, like the OG universe better. Unlike Rimmer, Iām notĀ jealous of the status of Lister, I just would miss Kryten and Cat and like the close knit feel of a small crew too much toĀ want to narratively stay in a no radiation leak universe. Also I still hate Listerās mustache.
