When James is young he’s closest to Lily; when he starts Hogwarts he’s probably closest to Roxanne (and Fred/Lorcan/Louis, but I think mostly Roxanne, since they’re both quite cocky and sarcastic sometimes. A bit of Rose, too, because they’re so different and have a really close friendship) and when he hits fourth-year or so he and Lysander become friends and then they become super close and best mates, and they stay friends for their whole lives. James is still close to Lily, Rose and Roxanne et al., but Lysander would take the top spot as his best friend.
