Song Appreciation Sunday: EXEC_HARMONIOUS
The whole point of it is to show Mir she’s understood, and the iconic “was ki ra revatail...” really punches that in for me. Usually Ar Tonelico lyrics are pretty packed. A lot of the songs are low on repetition, there’s lots of nice poetic imagery, and they elaborate on feeling states. Taking an example from later in this song, with “van fandel viega heighte mea,” etc. she expresses her intentions specifically and poetically and makes a bunch of separate statements to say basically one thing. I am in no way coming down against that, just to be clear, I love it.
But the deliberate focus of “was ki ra revatail...” stands out. I mean, that’s literally what it’s saying, “ki” is focus, and more often used in statements of evoking some kind of effect, like “wee ki ra chs Chronicle Key...” But this was one I learned early before I even thought about any of that (weird as that is to imagine now), and just reading the translation “Oh, Mir, the Reyvateil who crafted the Song of Hope,” I liked that “let’s just take a moment to feel for Mir.” Like Misha is emotionally being there with her.
I also love how Metafalica has its own meaningfulness to Jakuri. It’s so, for lack of a better word, human for personal meaning to build up like that, only loosely tied to the symbolism and events around Metafalica in AT2. It’s interesting to imagine how those things resonated from her perspective.
In general, the repetition is strong in this song and makes a nice catchy one that one word can get you singing. I recall a mention on the ARM Discord of a FFXIV character called Presia Kiafa or something. But no need to wait for that. In that kind of game “mule” is a common term. Yes, every time I hear it, *plays imaginary organ* ZADIUS RUM FERDAAA YOR DEEER SARLA MEA... I can’t decide whether to say “at least my game doesn’t have the ability Sublimation anymore” or “now if my game would just get the ability Sublimation back.”
Another bit of info about Harmonious, from kWhazit: “the Japanese rendition of the Hymmnos lines is written in classical (archaic) Japanese—typically even the songs with classical Japanese in the lyrics use modern Japanese to translate the Hymmnos lyrics.” That page also analyzes the Hymmnos, if that interests you.
Why are Jakuri’s shoes so much more comfortable than anyone else’s?
Because they’re Mule’s
