The Soulless God (The War of Souls Book 2)

For the first time in millennia, Jakari has hope that the war between the Char Oram and the Suil Agam might actually end. With help from a traitor within the ranks of the Char, she managed to kill the head of Char Intelligence and bait a trap for Saka, one of the members of the ruling Triumvirate. If she can kill Saka, it might give her a shot at taking down Jaya, the leader of the Char, and ending the war once and for all. Normally, she’d be perfectly confident in her ability to get the job done, but thrown off balance by her partner’s betrayal and the confusing feelings surrounding Hayami, the human detective she’s working with, Jakari is beginning to wonder if she’s up to the task. Hayami Takahashi has a problem. Or more accurately, she has two problems. The first is the alien civil war that has spilled over into Earth and threatens the very existence of the human race. The second is that she’s pretty sure she’s engaged to an alien assassin she’s only known a couple of weeks. She’s not sure which one she finds scarier. What she does know is that Jakari is the best hope humanity, but given her own disastrous history with women, Hayami is terrified that she might end up breaking Jakari before the enemy has a chance. With the fate of hundreds of worlds hanging in the balance, can Jakari and Hayami manage to get past their own problems and work together to deal with the threat Saka faces, or will they miss their only chance to end the war and save humanity?

There is a caveat to my celebrating though.

I have to wait until August 2023.

Over half a year.

Pretending like I'm some reasonable person, just... waiting. Fucking abominable. The wall is wiggling in agreement with me. (I joke. Mostly.)

I still think she'll probably have a small scale one, past few days have been STRESSFUL, but hey, it could've been much worse.

Jakari gave Mamachi one last pat on the back and walked back over to where Hayami was standing. Hayami reached out and took Jakari’s hand.

Turns out, Hayami is a walking talking fucking wrecking ball draped in a lesbian pride flag. Amazing how far through the book we got before that really hit home.

“You and Mamachi should head for the medical bay aboard the ship,” Napati said. “Now.”

Omfg. Let's just go find out what Rayak has managed to do to patch Skylar up.

Hayami was grateful for all of that, but the truth was, her mind was a thousand miles to the north, wondering and worrying about what Jakari was doing. At least until the alarms went off, announcing the first sensor sighting of the Char strike force.

I don't normally say this but these two are so gay it's almost worrying. Y'all are about to be fighting for your lives, please worry less about how your wife is doing in her fight and worry more about surviving your own to get back to her!

Here ends chapter 22. I should (fates be willing) be back to read chapter 23 in a few hours... or at least sometime before passing out tonight.

There was a part of her that knew she and Skylar absolutely should stay in the CIC where they were safe, but there was another part of her, and it was the part that was winning, that said there was no way in hell she was going to sit out a fight that could determine the fate of her planet.

Can gadans have heart attacks?

I'm just asking because it seems like Skylar and Hayami are out to do their damnedest to find out and I'm worried about Mamachi and Jakari.

Every part of her was screaming to forget the mission and go back, to protect Hayami.

Yeaaaaahh... This initial panic thing is gonna have to be something they find a way to work on sooner or later. Between how fragile gadan consider humans to be in general and Jakari's fears about losing loved ones in any capacity this seems pretty well guaranteed to cause some problems when Jakari tries to wrap Hayami in bubble wrap only for Hayami to tear it off and run headlong into danger because

1. that's part of her job and has been since long before Jakari was on the scene,

and 2. Jakari isn't the only one who worries.

(she doesn't turn back this time btw, which oooh boy Hayami better get through the base attack unharmed because I think Jakari will either fall apart or go nuclear or both if she doesn't after Jakari made the choice to stick on mission)
