Jack grew up in a human colony in the 51st century with his parents and brother, but after his brother was taken and his father was killed in an alien attack, he ran away and joined the Time Agency, where he first assumed the identity of a young soldier named Captain Jack Harkness. He used that alias for much of his life. After losing two years of memories, he deserted the agency to run cons and eventually became a companion to the Doctor. He died in a battle against daleks, but was resurrected and made immortal by the power of the time vortex, wielded by Rose Tyler.
He returned to Earth and decided to just wait for the Doctor, and after being discovered by Torchwood and used by them for many years, he rose up to the position of running Torchwood 3. He did find the Doctor again, but wasn’t able to get any answers about his immortality. He eventually left Earth and after many, many years, became the Face of Boe.

Jack got dropped right into the magical community when he landed in this time, which was how he met Sal. Soon after, he became a fixture of founders-era Hogwarts and he and Sal adopted a daughter. He stayed at Hogwarts until Sal left, then only moved on when he died.
