Category is: The Art of Existential Dread
Welcome to month two of our Artist Picks series! For this round of curated picks we have handed over the reins to @jackteagle who has put together a beautiful feast for the eyes centering around the idea of "Existential Dread."
Now, don’t be fearful of this concept—Jack actually relays the beauty and catharsis of this type of art, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect as we continue to celebrate Mental Health Month here on Tumblr.
Check out what Jack had to say below!
What does the art of existential dread mean to you?
I don't think existential dread is necessarily bad. When you feel it, it's time to fight against the darkness. I see it as a driving force for my creativity. Life can be bitter sweet, and being aware of your own existence can sometimes become overwhelming. When I feel down, I do what I can to combat those feelings. I create art and I look for art, music, film, poetry that celebrate life. There's a duality. Sure there's sadness, but that also gives us joy and happiness. It's about finding peace and balance. I think making art based on this subject matter is also a healthy way to explore your feelings. Humour is a good way to tackle difficult subjects. I can quite often feel alone and lost, but sharing these thoughts can help people to know they're not alone in feeling this.
Why did you pick these particular posts?
I selected these posts because I wanted a range of feelings that fell into the theme. You can have some sad imagery, and you can have art that tries it's very best to be beautiful despite turbulent times and feelings. Humour, beauty, or just plain being able to revel in sadness briefly. I guess maybe my message is that life is short, but there's also a lot of beauty and weirdness in the world for us to discover.
