It is Pride, and I would like to talk about my first time at a Pride Parade.
Now, when this happened, I was 12, it would still be a few years before gay marriage was legal, and we were on a family trip from Texas to California over our summer break, and we stayed in San Francisco for 2 days. On the second day, we were walking the streets, but we didn't see as many people there as the day before. We ducked into a shop in Chinatown, and my dad asked the shopkeeper casually why there aren't as many people around, and the shopkeeper told him that they were probably all lining up for the parade, which we didn't know was going on, and my dad became super excited to go see it, so he got directions to the parade and made us all go
Again, this was the San Francisco Pride Parade, and this happened during the W Bush administration, so everyone was going hard, and it was a lot for a good Christian girl from Texas who had no idea that being gay was a thing that people could do, plus her mom and 10 year old little brother, but both my dad and I were having a blast seeing all the colors and costumes and how happy everyone was.
Then, these two men walked by us, holding hands and wearing matching outfits. The outfits in question:
-flip flops
-knee high rainbow toe socks
-rainbow bead necklaces
-huge pink and rainbow feathered sombreros
That's it. End of list. Nothing else.
Obviously, this was a lot to me (it was the first two cocks I ever saw) but my dad made a joke that I didn't fully understand at the time but in retrospect was really funny, and I think you all on tumblr will appreciate it.
My dad turned to me and said:
"Do you think they woke up, said 'I have NOTHING to wear to the parade except these socks and this hat' and just went with that rather than risk going back into the closet?"
Shout out to the two straight actresses in the show I'm crewing for making the executive decision between the two of them that they're both gay and immediately into each other (even though one of them is investigating the murder of the other one's male lover) and consistently performing their scenes together that way, and coming up with a story that the suspect ends up in a lavender marriage to another suspect in the murder, and the both of them continuing to hook up together.
I love them both and I ship it hard
Nobody should ever take dating advice from me because according to my fiancé (who is the only relationship I've ever had that lasted longer than 12 weeks), I won him over halfway through our first date when I brought up DnD and he started telling me about the character he was currently playing in his first campaign, and I reached across the table so I could take his hand as I told him that he was playing his character entirely wrong* in the gentlest way possible, and from the moment our hands met, he was stuck, even after aaaaaalllllllllllllll the chaos that was our first few months together, which included both of us ending up in an ER within 24 hours of each other, introducing him to my family objectively WAY too early and at an event where we get crazy competitive, shoving all of my fandom interests in his face, and dragging him to his first con and ren faire, and then a two week cross country road trip with my family for Thanksgiving before we even hit the six month mark, and he still stayed for some reason.
*by "he was playing his character entirely wrong" , I don't mean from a min/max or like a character standpoint, I mean he was telling me how he would put his wizard in the front line to shoot lightning at the enemy even though his party had a barbarian, a fighter, but no dedicated healer, and in the most recent session, had jumped down an empty well without casting feather fall (a spell his wizard KNEW AND HAD PREPARED), that led to his character making death saves until the rest of the party (with feather fall cast on them all from a magic item by the BARBARIAN) could get down there and stabilize him with a medicine check. I was fully justified.
