I am absolutely furious about what AMCās Interview with the Vampire did to Gabrielle (And as an asexual fan, Iām SO done)
I need to vent because I am incredibly angry about the absolute trainwreck that is Gabrielleās adaptation in the new season. They completely destroyed her character for no reason at all.In Anne Riceās books, the moment Gabrielle is turned, her 'Mortal Idea' dissolves. Her human morality and maternal bonds vanish; she becomes cold, detached, and rejects the human world entirely to live a wild, solitary existence.
She doesn't care about vampire politics. She SHOULDN'T care. But, no, the show turned her into a stupid clichƩ, power-hungry villain leading a 'Great Conversion' cult.
Itās an insult to the source material. Anne Rice is probably rolling in her grave.
And worse, this cheap, explicit sexualization of their dynamic was completely unnecessary. As an asexual person, this deeply upsets me. Anne Riceās vampires donāt have biological sex; their intimacy is spiritual, aesthetic, and conceptual, centered entirely around the blood. The fact the show lore changed the gutted me, but now, by turning their complex, gothic bond into an explicit incestuous shock-value kiss, the show dragged a beautiful metaphor down to the gutter.
And to make matters worse, many critics are now viewing this through the narrow lens of modern human psychology, applying standard moral frameworks to beings that were meant to be beyond them.
It misses the essence of what these vampires represent in the literature.
Even if the show wanted to explore the darkness of their bond, it should not have been done through the limitations of human morality. It is so frustrating to see a masterpiece of gothic literature transformed into a cheap drama that relies on shock value and humanized over-sexualization.
