Heavy footsteps were the only sound that came from Steven Rogers as he made his way along familiar streets, heart heavy and mind full of chaos. For so long he had fought, aiming to be a hero to the people- to give help to those in need and stop all that meant harm in their paths- but he had f a i l e d.
They had all failed. And with that failure, came loss. Friends, loved ones, vanished right before his very eyes. He could still hear the panicked voice of his oldest and dearest friend, his brother, Bucky, echoing over and over within the haunted confines of his mind.
"Steve-?"
Shaking his head in an attempt to clear his mind, Steve swiftly traversed staircases he'd not climbed in a few years time- steps that lead forth into the only thing he had left. Home.
Brooklyn was all he had known growing up, never having traveled far due to both finances and his plethora of health impediments as a child- as an adult, up until the administration of the Super Serum. What good it had done.
The firm wooden door of his apartment creaked quietly as he pushed it wide, the scent of a living space that had been long vacant flooding his senses as weary bones carried him forth, closing the door without a single bother to turn the lock.
Solitary he stood in the midst of the room, broken blue orbs looking around at the decor, over pictures from his distant past and recent past fixed upon the walls.
Peggy. gone
Bucky. gone
His team. broken and gone
Memories of all that he'd had and all that he'd lost, taunting him with the reminder that he had failed.
Without warning, a deep seated shout of anger, grief, and desperation ripped forth from him, fist suddenly striking out at the wall, the weak wooden structure giving way to a wide, fist-sized hole. Peace avoided him yet, the dam he'd fought so hard to keep contained giving way to a fit of madness as bookshelf was ripped from its place, thrown across the once homely room. One by one, Steve let his emotions spill forth from him as the establishment he called home was wrecked by his own hands, the desire for all things to just stop filling him.
Seconds ticked by into minutes, until at last his strength failed him, the man who was often so fierce and steadfast left as nothing but a broken heap, slumped with his back against the wall as he clutched his head within his hands. Large tears fell from sorrowful blue orbs, sobs soon wracking forth from his body.
