Being the owner of a cat cafe was fun but a lot of responsibility. All the pastries were made fresh every day and the coffee was also roasted just before opening, all the cats had to be fed and given water and you made sure that the adoption catalogue was always up to date, every single day was different and it made you happy when the cats got adopted into families where they were loved and taken care of.
But like any cafe there were regulars and your favourite one was the regular who visits your cafe every single day. The shop was usually empty by 10 pm and that's when he usually came in.
As soon as he comes in he greets the cats, and then goes straight to the counter and orders a new drink and pastry and then sits down with the cats for an hour, gives them some treats and then leaves after cleaning up after himself.
Eventually, you guys started talking and became friends. In the beginning, you thought he was a bit strange but he always gave you a smile and the cats loved him too, so you thought that if the cats loved him, then maybe he wasn’t so bad.
But today was strange. Instead of coming in like usual, he knocked on the door before carefully peeking his head in.
“Can I talk to you for a minute?” You give him a smile and continue to wipe down the counters. “Sure. Come inside, Osamu. The cats might escape”
but instead of making his way in, he blocked the gap with his leg effectively blocking the path in case one of the cats tried to escape. He looks at you with an apologetic expression on his face. “I can’t”
This was strange, he usually just walked right into the store so why was he standing outside like that? “Why?” you ask while hanging the rag to dry.
He lets out a small laugh and rubs the back of his head. “I’m actually allergic and I forgot to bring allergy meds with me.”
You stare at him, completely surprised by the revelation. “You’re allergic to cats?” you laugh, doubling over as you hug yourself while trying to calm down, you can’t breathe and there are literally tears in your eyes. In your fit of laughter, you don’t see the look of adoration Osamu has as he stares at you. “Stop laughin’ and come ere’ ”
You grab a small box of anti-histamine from the drawer under the cash register and a small water bottle from the shelf behind you and walk over to him, he steps back to give you space as you exit the shop and carefully close the door behind you.
You hand him the water bottle and pop a pill into his hand. “Here.”
“Thanks,” he says, popping the pill into his mouth and washing it down with some of the water you gave him.
“So, you’re allergic to cats but you’ve visited the cafe every day since it opened” you smile, not even trying to hide the teasing tone in your voice.
“Haha, you think you’re funny?” he says, leaning back against the door frame as he waits for the meds to kick in.
“Well, I know I am. So, tell me, why did you visit every day even though you were allergic?” Your curiosity is evident from the tone of your voice. It makes him smile.
“I saw you, the day you opened and brought the cats in, you were so determined and were telling them how they’d all find a loving home eventually but for now they can live with you till they find one” he laughs at the memory of you. “It was cute”
This piques your interest. “You think I’m cute?” you ask, leaning against the frame of the door with your hands behind your back. You avoid looking at him, nervous about his answer.
“I do. So, how about coffee? Or dinner? My treat” he says as he steps in front of you, placing a finger under your chin and lifting your head so that you’re looking into his eyes.
“I’d love that” you smile, leaning in and giving him an unexpected kiss on the cheek. When you pull back you notice the rosy tint on his face.
How cute… you think to yourself. Even his ears are pink.
