The gym was open and it was a fairly normal day, Duggy was working over a bag while others trained around him, he was grateful for the opportunity to better himself, make Daz worry less, and Mal, he wanted them to be proud, wanted everything to go smooth, wanted to be more than a burden, a child.
Normally the opening of gym door didnât draw his attention but this time it did, this time was different. The scent alone was enough to draw his eye, something familiar, something special. It was like family but not in the way of their father, no, this was something far less awful, something more akin to the smell of Daz or Mal. Family wasnât what you were born with, but what you were made of. Mal was their Alpha, Daz was his brother, his guardian, but this man...
He was their father, more than Charlie or Mal, he made them all that they were, he made them. It was Jameson, and he wreaked of guilt, of trepidation. It gave Duggy some sense of relief. He should have felt that way. As quickly as heâd looked at Jameson, he went back to the bag. Ignoring him even as he approached. âHow much for a membership?â
âOh, âm not even gonna pretend ta think thatâs not a load of shit. I dun care why yer here, mate, jusâ go âfore Daz storms out here, yea?â he said looking over at the man whoâd caused so much suffering. Duggy didnât want to see the fight, he didnât want to be there for it. It would come, but he didnât need it to spoil all of the positives happening in his life.
âIâm not here to cause trouble, Douglas,â he said quietly.
âYeah, but you will, so just buzz off. You disappeared, we picked up all of the pieces, got everything going for us now. Havenât needed you so just go.â
Jameson nodded to his words. âAlright, alright, thatâs fair, but I already know you donât want me to go, you want me to make things right, I want that too. I never stopped thinking about you boys.â
Duggy looked to the slightly shorter man, heâd seen right through his bravado. Douglas was getting better at playing cool, and pretending to be less naive, less foolish, but Jameson knew. Maybe it wasnât something he could hide from him, maybe he was as part of him as Daz or Mal and some connections were just stronger than his will. He frown and turned away to grab his towel and water bottle. âDonât make promises to me. You told me you wouldnât go, did that didnât ya?â
