Liandrin doesn’t remember being human, but she remembers Jeaine. Jeaine who she can still sense, Jeaine who is alone, left to drown, tied to rocks. She yanks her free, of course, intending to bring her home, set her free. There’s blood in the water and she knows, she doesn’t get to free Jeaine. She has to take what belongs to her, to the sea, now. She’s quiet as she pushes Jeaine under, trying not to cry even as the woman sinks with her, her lips pressed to Jeaine’s before she shifts, sinking sharp teeth into the woman’s neck, turning her to her mermaid. The two will mate, hard and fast, quickly that night, more lanquidly the next day, it’s been a long, rough, painful road to this point, but now, finally, they are both free.

It starts as anger. Liandrin is almost dead by the time she follows the object of her devotion into the sea. Blood turning the water a rich red color even as she walks, the descent is easier, once she slips under the surface of the water. Lanfear has shifted, her legs becoming a tail as the sea floor tilts. Liandrin trusts her enough to let her take her under, the bite comes quickly, Liandrin lowered slowly, safely, to the sea floor, Lanfear curled over and around her as they wait, her lips soft at Liandrin’s ear. “My mermaiden. My love. My omega.” Later the Tower would hear of two murderous mermaids, an Alpha and her Omega, making merchildren and slaughtering sailors in the sea. Nobody but the Seat and her beloved would know who they were.

The wreck still sings her name. Liandrin knows that even as she finds herself dragged to the edge of the new boat. Her attempts to save herself had sunk so many, but now she was pushed to face the fact she would not be saved again. The first time had been easy to forget, for Ingrid. The wreck still sings her name, reminding her of the defeat, a fair defeat, at the hands of the Aes Sedai woman. Ice mermaids however, were not supposed to lose. So when she feels the woman’s body hit the water a second time, she rises to meet her, drag her under with an icy kiss, promising that drowning the woman is not the end. Liandrin will become a mermaid, her mate, her Alpha. They will share a life, share a love, even as Liandrin drowns, Ingrid’s kiss turning to a bite, bringing the woman to her side, forevermore.

Liandrin had come to Lanfear with a broken heart, taking comfort in Lanfear’s love, the two of them mending broken hearts by coming together. Liandrin lets Lanfear turn her even as they lie together, Lanfear becoming her Alpha in the same moment that Liandrin becomes a mermaid. Later they will drown the woman and man who caused them pain. Liandrin taking revenge for Lanfear and murdering Rand when the man falls into the sea, his heart set on the shrine of barnacles they have made, to remember their broken hearts. Moiraine chooses to swim when she is alone, mourning the woman she loved, a mistake that allows Lanfear to drown her and show her love for Liandrin. This, at last, sets them free. The barnacles, blood and shrine are ignored, passion overtaking both women one more time. The last time before they have the duty of raising children, together.

The sea asks a price… and Hope says yes. She sacrifices herself to the water, for Agatha. For love. She knows she must die, see the true face of death, to become what she must be to stay with the young Omega seawitch mermaid. Rio, the face she sees, graces her with both abilities to suit Agatha and a strength that surprises her. She’s been human her whole life, this is new, of course, but as she swims towards the place she knows is home, she knows that she is blessed. “Take care of her…” Rio sounds wistful and Hope smiles, her voice gentle. “Of course I will. Always.” Later, laying on cool sand with Agatha pressed to her side, she knows that making the choice to become the Alpha Agatha needs is worth the risk, even as she wonders what to make of the easy bond they formed on meeting again.

The surface doesn’t want them, the sea always does. Regina drowns first, leaping from a cliff into the water, not quite expecting to be welcomed by the sea and water around her. She surfaces as a mermaid, spending years alone. Ingrid joins her less willingly. Her people turn on her and towards Anna and Elsa instead, pushing her from her home. Regina senses it only moments before Ingrid is made an offering. In the end, Ingrid finds love with Regina, an alpha to her omega. They have their own life, now, free and left in peace in the peaceful waters of the sea.

The crown is made of teeth as she sets it on Morella’s hair. Morella, newly minted as both a mermaid and her lover, her Omega, smiles. She’s gained new teeth, of course, from becoming a mermaid, but the crown made of her own, is a promise. No more pain, ever again. Verna’s lips feel like love, feel like safety. She never has to be afraid. Frederick’s teeth are already sat on top of her lover’s hair and Morella knows this, his teeth on Verna’s head, is the last proof. There is no room for hate, not in their kingdom under the sea. Verna as her mermaid, her Alpha, feels right.

“Don’t open your eyes beneath the tide…” Ariel’s voice is soft in Morgan’s ear even as she swims deeper into the waters of the ocean. Morgan had been a surprise, falling into her world, but Ariel had needed to hide her before people found them. She’s at the edge of her world, next to Morgan’s, when she realises what she’s feeling. Morgan is hers, a destined mate for her. She’s quiet as she pulls Morgan along, the two of them emerging from the water on the other side. Ariel’s legs shake as she walks, she’s unusually sure she can walk, considering she usually gets one day a year on land, her gasp soft when her knees buckle, tipping her into Morgan. “Easy….” Morgan’s voice is soft, her eyes gentle even as she lowers Ariel to the ground with her. It’s not the easiest meeting, but as she settles them both to their knees, she can feel a familiar, hopeful, pull. “You okay?” “I am now.” The words are soft, Ariel’s smile sweet enough that Morgan finds herself smiling in return. It’s been a long time of wondering when she would find the right person. Everyone she had cared about for a long time had seemed to hate the idea of a woman as their alpha, but Ariel, gentle, sweet, Ariel, looked at her like she belonged. “Just stay with me?” Ariel’s request is so gentle that Morgan smiles again, her lips meeting Ariel’s softly. “Of course, my hero.”
