Yes, it is truly unfortunate. But if you are determined enough I’m sure you can make your very own Mermaid Ass, if you go to the right craft store, which is any craft store. 

I would never say no to a vegetarian mermaid!! Although both species have evolved to better suit their environment, humans and mermaids are more alike than different. It’s not defined as canon, but I think of the aquatic ape hypothesis when I consider a mermaid’s development! So aside from some adjustments here and there humans and mermaids would have to share a common ancestor, though would have to experience a founder effect to limit genetic variation. But this wouldn’t completely change what the body can and cannot digest! So the answer is: no! Mermaids definitely can have a long, healthy life without consuming meat!
