I went on a frustrating, and extremely stressful food run with a man who speaks little to no English last night. Okay, so, my mom got really hungry out of the blue and decided she wanted Pizza Hut. So she sends her boyfriend (and me) to get pizza for her. But lo and behold, Pizza Hut was closed, so she tells us to get Taco Bell. Ah, but of course, Taco Bell is closed for construction. So, my mom’s boyfriend and I end up driving around town, searching for restaurants still open when it’s so late at night, while also trying to get around the language barrier between us. I am constantly calling my mom, trying to ask what else she wants, but for some god forsaken reason, she won’t answer her phone. It seemed that the only thing he and I really understood between each other was the contempt we could hear in each other’s voices every time we left a message. After about an hour or so of driving, I just ask “Burger King?” and he agrees, so we stop there, because the drive through is still open, BUT THERES TWO PROBLEMS: 1) We cannot understand a single word the other is trying to say. 2) We have no idea what my mom wants. He and I just silently decided I would order for them. So after about 15 minutes of me pointing, and him either nodding or shaking his head, we finally make an order, and we finally think that this uncomfortable situation is over. And that, friends, is when my mom FINALLY calls back. I talk to her on the phone and tell her what we got for her, but she just says “Ew, I hate that.” Her boyfriend sees the look on my face and just fucking face plants into the steering wheel, then goes back to the drive through while I ask her what she wants. She then proceeded to cry and say she can’t order now, and that she can’t order because she isn’t there, looking at the menu. I just ask her if she wants a burger and she starts crying MORE and hangs up. So I just say fuck it, and her boyfriend and I drive home, both mentally and emotionally exhausted. When we get back, and he takes the food upstairs, but comes back downstairs after like 12 minutes and gives me her food, looking so defeated. After that I just sat down and stared into oblivion for about an hour. AFTER ALL SHE PUT US THROUGH TO GET FOOD BECAUSE SHE WAS HUNGRY, SHE DOESN’T EAT IT. NOT ONE BITE. AFTER ALL THAT FRUSTRATION AND STRESS, WE BOTH HAD NOTHING TO SHOW FOR IT. And that, friends, is the end of story time.
