#JackedKirby - A Snapshot Into the creative process behind an issue of The FF!! 4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣4️⃣ I always have a problem with the raw deal Jack Kirby got when it came to creator credit. Stan Lee is often cited as lone creator or co-creator... but in reality he was a scripted, dialoguing stories created by Kirby and the other artists at Marvel IN FULL once they were fully drawn. That means he added the snappy dialogue, sure... but it also means that his dialogue had to correspond with the story and characters that the artist drew FIRST. So while the art EXISTED before there was any dialogue from Stan, Stan couldn’t possibly write any dialogue BEFORE the story was drawn. This process has become known as the “Marvel Method”. The truth behind this method is often skewed in a way that paints the artists as dependent on Stan Lee the great writer... but evidence points to the opposite being true. 😥😥😥 Case in point this photostat of an original Page Of FF #Issue61 which was published in April of 1967. In this issue we see the return of Sandman, who later would become much more associated with Spider-Man’s rouge gallery but started off as a FF villain. Now according to the legend of Stan Lee he would have you believe that he is the “co-creator” of this story... but the original page would paint a much different picture. ❓❓❓ We see Jack’s original pencils and layouts in these pre-inked/colored pages... but the most important item to look at are his MARGIN NOTES. He is informing the writer EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING in the scene... laying out EXACTLY WHAT DIRECTION the dialogue must take. Kirby is WRITING THE STORY... and then Stan is DIALOGUING THE PANELS. This can’t be questioned... unless you want to just abandon all logic!!!! 💥💥💥 In each of the close ups I cut up of the ORIGINAL Page we see time and time again how Jack is writing the story as he goes. He is adding details like the fact that Sandman is using sand stones to pelt Mister Fantastic.... he even talks about how Sandman’s belt has multiple functions that prepare him for battle! Look at the dialogue Stan wrote on the final page. It’s almost word for word like Jack’s description!!! (Continued below)

#JackedKirby - Lightnin’ & The Lone Rider!!! 💥💥💥 Before Jack got his start on comics he went to work for Lincoln Features Syndicate working on various comic strips that varied from humor to westerns. One of these strips was an old West Tale called Lightnin’ & The Lone Rider, which ran in publications throughout most of January and February of 1939. As was the case with most comic strips back them, they were often bunched together and repackaged as comic books at a later date. 💥💥💥 This particular strip would go on to appear in Famous Funnies later in 1939. The full page ad announcing the upcoming run (Pic 1) appeared in #Issue61 from August of 1939. The first strip appeared in #Issue62 of Famous Funnies from #Issue62 from September of 1939. (Pic 2/3) 💥💥💥 In the pinup we get an interesting look at a Very young Jack’s style when it comes to westerns... I really love the masked figure and his whites out eyes, something that would become a staple of Jack’s in the future! The strip itself contains some elements of Jack’s artistic style that would become well known later on... but you can see he is developing and growing as an artist and is on his way to what he would eventually become.
