Which GCC Corridor Is Cheapest for International Relocation? ISS Relocations Data Shows Wide Cost Gap Across Routes
Dubai, United Arab Emirates β New data from ISS Relocations, a FIDI-accredited international relocation company headquartered in Dubai, shows a significant cost gap between the region's cheapest and most expensive relocation corridors β a gap the company says is driven largely by shipping distance, customs complexity, and current 2026 route disruptions rather than by the size of a household shipment alone.
What did the data find?
According to ISS Relocations GCC Relocation Index 2026, the cheapest major international corridors from the UAE are India and Sri Lanka, where full-service moves for a standard shipment can start from as little as AED 7,500 to AED 16,000. Sea freight on these routes takes just 4 to 10 days port-to-port, among the shortest transit times of any corridor the company tracks.
At the other end of the range, Canada and the USA are the most expensive corridors, with comparable full-service shipments running AED 24,000 to 42,000 or more. Transit on these routes now takes 28 to 42 days port-to-port, reflecting both the greater shipping distance and the 10-to-14-day extension most carriers have added in 2026 due to Cape of Good Hope rerouting away from the Red Sea.
Why is there such a large cost difference between corridors?
ISS Relocations points to three factors driving the gap: distance and transit time, customs clearance complexity, and current shipping route disruptions. India and Sri Lanka benefit from short sea crossings and comparatively straightforward customs processes for returning residents. Canada, by contrast, requires more document-intensive customs clearance β including CBSA Form B4A, which must be presented at the first port of entry before a shipment arrives β while Australia, though not among the most expensive corridors on freight cost alone, adds 5 to 15 business days to total moving time due to mandatory biosecurity inspection.
"People often assume a move costs roughly the same regardless of where they're going, and that's simply not true in this region," said Abhilash Nair, Global CEO of ISS Relocations. "A move to India can cost a third of what the same size shipment costs to Canada, mainly because of distance and how much customs documentation is involved. Understanding that gap early lets people budget accurately instead of being surprised by a quote."
What about moves within the GCC?
Intra-GCC road freight remains the most cost-efficient relocation option available in the region, according to the Index. A move from Dubai to Muscat, Oman, the shortest GCC route, can cost as little as AED 2,800, with transit taking just 6 to 18 hours. Longer intra-GCC routes, such as Dubai to Kuwait City, cost more due to distance and border-crossing complexity, but still remain well below the cost of most international corridors.
How was this data compiled?
The corridor cost comparison is drawn from ISS Relocations' GCC Relocation Index 2026, which combines the company's own operational move records from more than 100,000 relocations managed since 1996 with current maritime shipping data and official customs guidance from authorities including UK HMRC, US CBP, Canada's CBSA, Australia's DAFF, and Gulf customs authorities.
