I promise I am not poisoning myself by eating the occasional raw potato x’D

It’s entirely my mother’s fault. Way back when she still cooked regularly, fresh potatoes made frequent appearances, whether they were getting mashed or added to a roast. And Mom’s habit has always been to cut off an extra slice and just. Munch. Sometimes with a little salt added.

I inevitably picked up this habit, minus the salt, and liked the texture and lack of flavor so much that I’d swipe an extra piece. Then, multiple extras. Sometimes as much as half an entire potato, until Mom got to the point of saying “just wash and peel an extra one for yourself, you weirdo.”

...well she never actually called me a weirdo, but it was definitely implied.

A few years down the line it turned into a running gag with my stepfamily, whenever fresh potatoes were being prepared for something. I will Forever Cherish the memory of their faces the first time I asked for a completely raw piece, and the way my dad just sighed and shrugged rather than provide anything resembling an explanation.
