Happy #blackhistoryseason ! This photograph was taken 4 years ago, in October 2014. It shows one of 3 distinct styles of hair presentation worn traditionally by Yoruba women: Irun Kiko (hair knotting with threading). Most of us are familiar with Irun Biba (hair braiding) and Irun Didi (hair plaiting w/o thread). These styles often indicated things about the identity of the women who wore them, including class status. Our Hair has always been integral to our identity, our Africaness. I do not know he name of the young woman stylist, but the photographer is @julianakasumu . She’s a wonderful young talent. I loved going home on the train that night, from the shoot, with the hairstyle in tact. If it weren’t so difficult to sleep with it (howwwwww???) , I would have kept it in. Would you wear this style? #blackhistorymonth #blackhistoryiseveryday #Afrohair #blackhairflair #notjusthair #irunkiko https://www.instagram.com/p/BoeJz_CFH-1/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=vptqvohaqs4o
