The Blind Assassin - Margaret Atwood
I have to be honest here: I had to really push myself into reading the first 200 pages, but there’s no denying that this is an amazing book.Â
Like I said, the first pages are a bit tough, mostly because there are so many parts of the story thrown together that it takes you a while to figure out. But once you understand, it’s captivating and you really want to know what all happened and who the woman in the blind assassin is.Â
Atwood writes about an old woman, Iris Chase Griffen, who looks back at the death of her sister Laura fifty years after the event, and everything that lead up to it. She does this to explain to her granddaughter how her family ended up the way they did. The story of Iris is mixed with fragments of a book that her sister wrote before her death, The Blind Assassin, and newspaper excerpts.Â
The true gem of The Blind Assassin however, is the style of Margaret Atwood. The way she writes is breathtaking and so worth pushing through these first pages.Â
The only way you can write the truth is to assume that what you set down will never be read. Not by any other person, and not even by yourself at some later date. Otherwise you begin excusing yourself. You must see the writing as emerging like a long scroll of ink from the index finger of your right hand; you must see your left hand erasing it.

I finished reading The Blind Assassin today. There were like 20 pages to go, and then the book just completely threw me for six. I literally, out loud, said "WHAT!?" Now I feel like I need to re-read the whole thing in light of this knowledge given so close to the end. But, I start teaching again tomorrow and the book is over 600 pages long so...
