There once was an IRC network by the name of ø (nothing). It lived a short life, doing absolutely nothing until I shut it down.
Why? People told me that it was pointless; that it just wasted space and time. Maybe that's true, but it was fun while it lasted.
It was also an annoyance for Zef Hemel and his Zed project (these two issues).
But why not start an IRC network?
Well, unless you have some good reason or userbase that your network will benefit from, you're better off just using freenode. Nobody will join your network for fun and profit. There needs to be a project there.
"You have a project!" I hear you say. "What about ^w?"
No, that doesn't work. People aren't going to join your network just because they want to chat about your new project - they just won't bother, as everybody uses freenode nowadays.
But, it just might be worth the unnecessary work to have a little fun, even if it doesn't grow.
