Death Omens in Iraeya
It’s not Halloween yet, but I’m in a Spooky mood so today we’re going to talk about omens/superstitions surrounding death or just generally Bad News in the four kingdoms of Fictional World #2: Iraeya.
DOLMON: The Parade of Souls- In Dolmon there is a legend of a parade of figures in white, so many they are uncountable. The leader wears a dusty robe and plays a mournful harp, one that can be heard far over the hills. Seeing them is a bad omen, but hearing the songs they sing behind the harp-playing leader is a worse one. It is said if you stray too close to the parade, you will soon be joining them. Never join in their singing, or your death will be a violent one.
EDLAN: The Black Gull- The Black Gull is not really a gull at all, but a giant, spectral bird said to be seen soaring over land where death will soon happen. If seen with red feathers under its wings, blood will be shed. If white under-feathers are present, the death will be natural. If all black, more than one person will die. Seeing more than one bird at one time indicates a famine, war, plague, or natural disaster.
SKALLON: The Mare- Appears as an emaciated, or sometimes skinless, horse seen usually from afar. Sometimes it has a rider, sometimes not. If it is facing you, it will be you who dies, but if it faces away the death has already happened. Either way seeing it foretells a death within that coming year. In some cultures it is said that looking at the Mare in itself won’t harm you, but if you look at the rider and see your own face, you will die.
SELLIX: The Boatman- Similar to Dolmon’s Parade of Souls, in Sellix the personification of Death is a shrouded figure at the prow of a boat, leading the souls he has reaped for that day along with him down the river to the afterlife. The entrance to this afterlife is said to be in a cliff somewhere, accessed only by a river the living cannot see - unless you too will soon die, that is. It is for this reason that travelling by boat, with one boat after another in a line, is considered bad luck, especially at night.
So there it is. Follow for more occasional spookiness.
